Modern Icons: The FL/Y Pendant
Well, to be clear, I mean "modern" as in "modern day," because the FL/Y Pendant light was not manufactured until 2002. However, architect Ferruccio Laviani's design would have fit right into a Mid-Century Modern home fifty years ago or in an office set for Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce.
The FL/Y Light is often compared to a bubble and comes in a rainbow of colors. However, I've noticed that most of of the designers around here tend to favor the yellow and orange options. Its shape is not half a sphere, but rather it is cut off below the diameter (it's radius about 20.5 inches wide but it's 13" long), which I'm told collects more light.
This is one of those pieces that changes dramatically when it's turned on. The transparent but colored plastic lets you see what's behind it in a new way when it's off, while the material allows for reflections of light when it's on. The bulb shows a lot more when it's on as well, and the play of the bulb shape and the bigger-than-half-a-sphere shape is clever. Even better, unlike a lot of iconic pieces, the price on the FL/Y will not break the bank.
P.S. If you see any more FL/Y pendants on Houzz, please let me know in the comments section so I can add them. I know I've seen more, but I couldn't find them!

The FL/Y is a great choice for a kitchen table, especially a circular one.
The pendant is also great when all you need is one overhead light for a room. It's so much better looking than those fixtures that I have no better name for than "boob lights."
We modern fans all seem to love a dash of orange
Ah, finally! Someone broke out and tried it in a color from the blue family! This picture shows how nicely scaled it is with a small tulip table.
