All my icons are gone from Desktop

On my Gateway laptop (using Vista), I have it set up for 2 users: one is my personal stuff, and the other is my business stuff so I am back and forth all day long checking both and working in both. For some strange reason, all my icons are gone from my personal desktop but remain on the other one. The desktop picture is still there though.

I tried rebooting thinking that would bring them back, but it didn't. I haven't done anything out of the ordinary today to cause this.

Anyone know how to get them back? Thank in advance.

Upon searching for an answer, I found one. Right click on DT and click "show DT icons". DAH!!! I should have done that before posting!!!!

I never clicked them off in the first place. Oh well, I have my answer.

Good for you Deb. Nothing more satisfying the resolving a concern yourself through research, and at times trial and error. Always think positive and keep up the good work.

Thanks, that's were I was when the Icon became unresponsive and I decided to "exit" it and post here. I had done a properties and gave it only a quick look, seeing something (poor memory) about desktop... then I click (left) on the icon and a small display/dialog box came up showing some thermometer style meters with a horizontal orientation. I couldn't get the display to disappear so I clicked the "exit" button. I have Firefox and Thunderbird and they try to connect add-ons at every update, it seems. I try to cancel the add-ons, I have enough trouble trying to remember all the features of the core application.

oh you mean you are trying to use it as your wallpaper? not simply trying to put an icon size of it? then yes urlee is likely right the picture was not of a high enough quality to be able to be stretched to the size you need for wallpaper, however in the wallpaper settings area you can choose how to display it, fit scree, original size, tiled etc, I would try one of the options other than fit screen and see how that works. (right click on desktop and choose properties to get to wallpaper area) Usually when people send a picture through email they limit the size so as not to bog down the persons email with a huge image, so those images are generally not good choices for enlarging.

At this point, I would try turning off the power supply and turning it back on again. If it starts ok, you're done. if not, the next steps depend on what happens when you try this. When you start again, take notes of any messages that show up in case we need the info in them to get to the next step.

desktop icons highlighted?

Is you computer trying to open all the programs of the icons? Where is the highlighting? I had all my icons get highlighted and start to open because my shift (I think it was shift, or something like that), key was stuck down. It wasn't stuck literally, but it was stuck from an internal/interface perspective, since I spilled coffee on my keyboard and it really messed it up as far as the way the keys worked. Could it be a keyboard issue like mine was? Or maybe a mouse interface issue? I dunno, because the "black" description seems confusing.

When you hide your desktop icons to enjoy the wallpaper you still have access (better access in my opinion) by clicking the 2 small right facing chevrons just to the left of your clock on the taskbar. Icons cluttering up the desktop require the user to iconise any open window for them to be used, using the chevrons you need close no window.
