Right click on the desktop, choose properties, choose effects, uncheck "use large icons".

I don't understand your question on putting a picture on the desktop.

Thank you rrcrossing for your quick reply. I do not have effects, but do have appearance, and that did the same. In regards to the picture, it is one that was sent to my in my e-mail and it is in the list of pictures that you can put on your desktop, but for some reason this one is all fuzzy when I put it on. Any of the other ones come out just fine. Is it because this one came through with my e-mail, or is there another reason???

Maybe it is too small for a desktop image and when stretching it causes it to lose quality.
What size is it compared to the others you have used?

oh you mean you are trying to use it as your wallpaper? not simply trying to put an icon size of it?

then yes urlee is likely right the picture was not of a high enough quality to be able to be stretched to the size you need for wallpaper, however in the wallpaper settings area you can choose how to display it, fit scree, original size, tiled etc, I would try one of the options other than fit screen and see how that works. (right click on desktop and choose properties to get to wallpaper area)

Usually when people send a picture through email they limit the size so as not to bog down the persons email with a huge image, so those images are generally not good choices for enlarging.

Right click on the desktop,properties,appearance and select the font size as normal and click on apply.
