I got the pop-up telling me to download IE8 at 4:00 am (during a bout of insomnia), and didn't think it was the best time to take chances. : )

Just wanted to say that I upgraded to IE8 on both computers, and all went well. I like it, too. And, worth mentioning, the computer with Windows XP was so slow before, but with the new IE8, it's a lot faster. There must have been some conflicts between that computer and IE7.

IF you do not also have a second browser it is a good practice to have at least 2 on any pc, firefox or opera would be good choices. I much prefer using firefox over IE.

Another option for a secondary browser is SRWare's Iron (based on Google's Chrome but without the privacy 'issues'). It hasn't got all the bells and whistles just yet (no themes, extensions, etc.) but it's fast and nice to use -- esp. if someone only wants it as a back-up.

I don't see how installing a new browser would cause a problem with any monitor made in recent history. There might have been a need to change the resolution (very unlikely, but possible), but nothing necessitating a new hardware purchase. How did you come to this conclusion?

Does that mean if a bad update goofs up IE really bad FF would still work?!! At least enough to get info to fix it? That would be a very good thing. I thought it affected the whole computer! Confused.

a bad update could affect just the browser or many parts of the Operating system. But it definitely can happen that Internet Explorer fails for one reason or another. Then having an alternative browser to be able to get online is a life saver other wise you have no way to access the web.
So yes to your question IE could fail and firefox still work just fine allowing you to access help to fix your IE.
If it was one that shut down the entire OS then it won't help that necessarily

kudzu, that's the thing, the monitor wasn't made in recent history. : D It was a CRT monitor. I forget why; but the resolution didn't fit, or something like that - or it was difficult to read - it was too long ago to remember the exact details. But, it was past time to get a flat screen monitor anyway, so it was a good thing. I think I even remember a topic on this forum talking about this subject back in the early IE7 days. Or somewhere on the internet...
