Internet Explorer 8

I keep getting notifications to update to IE8. Is it ok to just do it? Any problems reported with it? One computer is Windows XP, my laptop is Vista.

The last time I updated IE, I ended up having to get a new monitor because the resolution (or whatever it was) didn't 'work' with my old monitor. Just want to know if I should expect any surprises like that. : )

Unfortunately nothing works 100% for everyone.

I've had IE8 on this Vista system since it was released without any concern.

Might want to read a bit before installing IE8 for known ssues to hopefully avoid any conflict snag.

Six years is doing good. However give us a make and model number, that always helps things along. Have you ever removed the side panel and blown out the dust bunnies. This is the first place to start. If the computer rests on the floor move it up, even a 6 inch block will work wonders as all dust eventually reaches floor level and you disturb it as you walk about. The fans then suck it in. If it is dusty in there buy a bottle of compressed air, remove the computer outdoors (you don't want to upset whoever cleans the house) and blow the dust out. BE SURE to hold a finger on the fan so it does not spin wildly and pay particular attention to the fan on the motherboard. This protects your processor and very likely it is overheating and shutting down to prevent damage. If you live in a VERY dusty environment and it is bad in there then also take a look between the plastic front panel and the metal behind. There is a 3/4 inch space that can get bad. You can also test for heat issues by removing the left side and use a small house fan to blow in on the components. This is not a fix but a temporary measure so you can decide if heat is the issue here. Let us know how that works for you

Here is the listing from whocrashed. I see that it refers to avast antivirus. When I initially tried to install my new IE* I believe that I had disabled Avast for 10 minutes. But I admit that I have forgotten to disingage it in all of my other actions. I will send this and perhaps I will have time to use your routine above to try uninstalling ie8 again with avast disabled and get back again. If I had any sense, I would have tried system restore. I haven't really done that much with this computer and it likely would have done the trick in the first place. Change IE 9 to IE 8

Something simple you might consider trying first... Put IE9 in compatibility mode by clicking the little icon beside the address bar(see below). That will make your IE9 appear to be and supposedly render pages as if it were IE7. It may or may not help but it's easy to try. Thanks to you both. I don't think I'll rush on it, and check out the links first.

I got the pop-up telling me to download IE8 at 4:00 am (during a bout of insomnia), and didn't think it was the best time to take chances. : )

Just wanted to say that I upgraded to IE8 on both computers, and all went well. I like it, too. And, worth mentioning, the computer with Windows XP was so slow before, but with the new IE8, it's a lot faster. There must have been some conflicts between that computer and IE7.

IF you do not also have a second browser it is a good practice to have at least 2 on any pc, firefox or opera would be good choices. I much prefer using firefox over IE.
Should your IE crash and burn having another browser on the pc would allow you to still be able to get online.

Another option for a secondary browser is SRWare's Iron (based on Google's Chrome but without the privacy 'issues'). It hasn't got all the bells and whistles just yet (no themes, extensions, etc.) but it's fast and nice to use -- esp. if someone only wants it as a back-up.

I don't see how installing a new browser would cause a problem with any monitor made in recent history. There might have been a need to change the resolution (very unlikely, but possible), but nothing necessitating a new hardware purchase. How did you come to this conclusion?

Does that mean if a bad update goofs up IE really bad FF would still work?!! At least enough to get info to fix it? That would be a very good thing. I thought it affected the whole computer! Confused.

a bad update could affect just the browser or many parts of the Operating system. But it definitely can happen that Internet Explorer fails for one reason or another. Then having an alternative browser to be able to get online is a life saver other wise you have no way to access the web.
So yes to your question IE could fail and firefox still work just fine allowing you to access help to fix your IE.
If it was one that shut down the entire OS then it won't help that necessarily

kudzu, that's the thing, the monitor wasn't made in recent history. : D It was a CRT monitor. I forget why; but the resolution didn't fit, or something like that - or it was difficult to read - it was too long ago to remember the exact details. But, it was past time to get a flat screen monitor anyway, so it was a good thing. I think I even remember a topic on this forum talking about this subject back in the early IE7 days. Or somewhere on the internet...

I have moved to Mozilla Firefox and some times I use Google chrome. So I suggest you to try some other browsers.
