Ever had 'one of those' weeks?

It's only a few days before my daughter's wedding and I find myself wishing we could push it out a few weeks. But alas, I can't.

Erin (the bride) fell and sprained her ankle a week and a half ago. Up until a couple of days ago she was walking with a crutch. Hope she'll be able to dance at her wedding!

Frank is not doing well at all. I visited him on Saturday and it was extremely difficult to see him get frustrated as he tried to communicate, and having so much difficulty doing mundane things such as feed himself. He really wants to go home but can't fully comprehend why he cannot.

Now they have found blood clots on his lungs. Unfortunately, the medicine they use to combat blood clots also has the tendency to cause bleeding in the brain. Talk about a rock and a hard spot! If he gets thru this, the docs now say he may have 3 months. Have I mentioned that cancer SUCKS????

My 11 year old German Shepherd, Mojo has been diagnosed with a very weird disease-Canine Vestibular Disease. In a nutshell it is like an inner ear infection without the infection. He is in the midst of his second bout within 3 weeks. He was fine and then, out of the blue started falling down. He walks like he is drunk and cannot keep his balance. He won't eat. He'll only drink water if I scoop some up in my cupped hand for him.

They say it is not serious, it will just go away on it's own. Takes anywhere from 3 days to 3 weeks. The first bout took a week, but then he was only good for a week and it came back twice as bad as the first bout. It's awful to watch your baby stumble around all freaked out and there's not a damn thing you can do about it.

I was offered a job. Sounds like good news, right? Not.

It is at the hospital, a job similar to what I am/was doing at my current job, but including weekends and holidays. I really didn't want to take it (for that and a number of other reasons), but feel I had no choice. My hours at my current job had been cut from 30-35 hours a week to 24-30 hurs a month. We need the income. So I start August 3rd. Not really looking forward to it, but I figure if I can stick it out 6 months I can see what other jobs within the company I can transfer to, but for now I at least have a job. I'll make the best of it while I am there.

(For those of you wondering....I decided not to pursue a career in the insurance business.)

Sorry to whine, it's just been a crappy couple of weeks and I guess I just needed an outlet. Along with a bunch of little things, it's one of those times when nothing seems to be going right.

Oh Linda, I wish I could be there to put my arms around you and give you a big "oh poor baby." Sympathy doesn't fix anything but it helps you feel a bit better. So does whining!

I am most sorry that Frank is not doing well. I truly hope he will gradually improve.

Yes, in this economy we can't be too choosy about jobs. I guess you have to count your blessings that you found another with the number of hours that you need.

Wow, your daughter sure had bad timing. My friend badly sprained her ankle playing tennis before her daughter's big fancy wedding. She had to walk down the aisle wearing a big boot on her foot. Lovely. Maybe your daughter could get away with some sort of less conspicuous supporter for the day. What a shame, but sprained ankles can turn around quickly. I've had some doozies and usually could walk fine within a week.

And the dog. That's a shame. Poor thing.

Just hang on -- things have got to get better. Maybe once the pressure of the wedding is over, things will seem more manageable.

When I was a kid, my mother's long lost cousin decided to visit in the middle of the kitchen renovation. When I say the middle, I mean the part where there really isn't a kitchen and the fridge is in the dining room and you're cooking on a plug-in burner in the den. Mom served up one of her signature breakfasts on the porch. Eggs, bacon, muffins, fresh peaches and cream, juice, the whole deal, all on the family china that their mutual great-aunt hand-painted during the Depression. All mom did was unearth the china and clean the porch, realizing pretty early on it was the only thing that could be cleaned. I think she made my brother and me take baths too. Her cousin commented she had the most lovely old Southern porch for breakfasts. Of course, I'm not sure we let her in the house to use the bathroom.... I distinctly recall explaining to one of her kids that it was much more fun to pee in the bushes out back, like camping. Mama could clean me up, but she couldn't quite tame me.

We use Dutch-process cocoa instead of the more usual natural cocoa to give the bread a richer brown color. Prep: 20 minutes plus rising Bake: 20 minutes Makes 2 loaves, 12 slices each 1/4 cup warm water (105 to 115 degrees F) 1 package active dry yeast 3 teaspoons granulated sugar about 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1/3 cup unsweetened Dutch-process cocoa 1/3 cup packed brown sugar 1 3/4 teaspoons salt 1 cup freshly brewed coffee, cooled until warm (105 to 115 degrees F) * 4 tablespoons butter or margarine,softened 1 large egg, separated 3/4 cup dried tart cherries * 3 squares (3 ounces) bittersweet chocolate, coarsely chopped * 1 teaspoon water In cup, combine warm water, yeast, and 1 teaspoon granulated sugar; stir to dissolve. A couple of years ago (when I was 35 weeks pregnant for Benjamin), I had something similar happen. I remember I was sitting in the bathtub having a cool bath - Claude was sitting on a stepstool beside the tub and we were just chatting. All of a sudden, my heart started to race and I felt lightheaded. We rushed to emerg. at the hospital and when they registered me and checked my vitals, my heart rate was over 250 beats per minute!! I didn't realize a heart could go that fast! It didn't go down on its own - I had to have oxygen and a shot of some sort at the hospital to make it calm down. The doctors called it SVT - Supraventricular Tachycardia. It happens periodically now, but only for a few seconds at a time. I haven't had anything that severe since (Thank God!). My doctor at the time told me that if it started happening frequently, I could have a relatively simple procedure called an ablation done on my heart that should take care of it. A very few percentage of people with SVT end up having to have pacemakers. It's VERY scary when it happens, but from the reasearch I've done, I've found that it's not usually really serious or life-threatening. Just something else that it could possibly be. What a bummer! My DS 15yo is totally bewildered by piecing/quilting as a hobby in the first place, but he really tries to be gracious. I was wailing about having to undo a row, and he smiled brightly and patted me on the top of the head and said "Well...it's just more quilting fun!" Like if I was insane enough to do it once, I'd probably be comforted by thinking I got to do it again! It did kinda put it in perspective for me, and now when I have redo a piece and rematch those pesky points, I snort to myself and think "More quilting fun."

Oh yeah I've had "one of those weeks", at time life just sucks, huh?

I'm so sorry that you have a lot on your plate right now.

I had a very hard time when my old Bassett Hound would get sick. I felt so helpless and he did too! Hopefully MoJo will be better in a short time and that will be one of the things you can remove from the list.

Poor Erin! I, too, hope that she will have a stronger ankle come wedding day.

I'm so sorry that Frank is not doing well. I know you will cherish the time you have left with him.

A new job and the anxiety that goes along with that are stressful enough without having everything else going on.

Hang in there Linda and vent as much as you need too!

I will keep Frank in my thoughts and prayers.

I have no doubt that Erin will dance at her wedding.

I do have a couple of ideas for Mojo that might help. You might try to elevate his food and water bowls. Every time he bends his head down he is experiencing extreme vertigo, so the less that he has to bend down, the better. I have also used feeding tube syringes to get fluids down before. You can also liquefy his food and get it into him with the syringes. Just a little at a time on his tongue.

I can totally relate to many of the things you mention. Sometimes things just suck, no two ways about it. I so wish I could come over for a visit and share the last of my raspberry summer torte with you!
I've been having a rough summer too. I try and count my blessings for solace. I have to do it many times a day! Your friendship on this board is one of them though, Linda!!

That is horrible Linda. I just wish I could take some of it off of you. Keegan kitty would eat and drink when I lifted bowls after he got the disorder that made it hard for him to hold his head up. I think he couldn't manipulate his head to the bowl until I did that. We should take you out for a girl's night out (until Jim, Lars, and Lou show up, then it'll just be a night out). How about a break for one lil' ol' night?

Ah well, we all get thru the tough stuff with a little help from our friends, right?

Mojo is better, but still moves like Otis Campbell. (Anybody watch the Andy Griffith Show?)

I think I'll go visit Frank tomorrow. I do want to see him before we leave for the wedding. He so wanted to go, but $hit happens. I just hope he is well enough that mom feels she can go for a couple of days. His kids are nearby, so I am hoping. But if she doesn't, we'll all understand.

Praying that Mo doesn't have an attack of the CVD while our house-sitters are here. I am going to call and explain it to them, plus the neighbors know what is going on and I am leaving their numbers for them.

Thanks again.....I am going to have a glass of wine and "fuhgeddaboudit" for a little while.

Oh geez, Linda, that sucks. Everything sure seems to happen at once, doesn't it?

I'll be thinking strong healing thoughts for Erin's ankle, for Mojo, and for Frank.

I sure hope the job is better than you expect. Should I mix up a pitcher of that sangria? And deliver it?

Frank is doing better, we saw him yesterday and he can now carry on a conversation. His prognosis at this point is still only a matter of months, tho.

Mojo is not doing well at all. It seems to be getting worse. I wish I did not have to leave.... Going to wait until we get home to take him to the vet because I am afraid the news will be bad and there is nothing we can do about it until then anyway. I talked to the neighbor and they will be around if our house-sitters need help.

Erin is doing fine....she's not even nervous! LOL Peppi, she told me to tell you to "absolutely" crash the reception! LOL

Thanks for the continued hugs and well wishes. This too shall pass.....

Oh Linda, I feel for you! Our beloved Zeke was so ill the week before DD's wedding and I was going nuts. I took him into the doc when an abscess developed on his leg,and they kept him at the vet for a few days so that I had some peace of mind while I was so busy. He did come home afterwards. Consider that as an option too.

We ended up taking Mo to the vet this afternoon. It was so painful to watch him stumble around. She is still pretty sure its Vestibular Disease, tho. Everything else checks out just fine except he has lost 6 lb. in the last two weeks.

She did prescribe an antibiotic just in case there is an inner ear infection that she can't see. I called Joe, the young man that will be taking care of the house and the dogs over the weekend. He's cool with everything. I also signed an authorization at the vet just in case Joe feels there is a need to bring him in during our absence.

A lot has been going on for all of my family the last couple of weeks. I hope that all of us can just go to the wedding, relax and enjoy ourselves. A few cocktails will help with that, I am sure. The rest is in the hands of some higher being.....

I'll check in after the weekend!
