I take some mucinex with guafinisin to thin out the mucus and always get the decongestant behind the counter with pheudophedrine. The other stuff that is OTC just doesn't do it for me. I have been bothered by my allergies the last few days and is about to drive me nuts. I need to get some allergy medicine before my eyes swell up.

Alex, that is no fun! There's some type of virus going around here. Kim has it, She came home from work Tues afternoon, did the same on Wed. then stayed home all day yesterday. She went to work today, saying that she would be home as early as possible..

I take pseudoephedrine, usually one 30mg tablet at a time works, and I start taking it as soon as I suspect anything. So far it's worked. The new stuff (phenylephrine) sends my heart rate soaring, so I can't take it.

I don't care if they think I'm making meth in the basement. I don't know what I'll do if they ever decide to take pseudoephedrine off the market, I'm allergic to the most useful antibiotics, as well as Tylenol (acetaminophen), so I'm obsessive about heading off sinus infections.

I don't take any combination medicines any more, they have too much useless stuff that I don't need. If I need the individual ingredients, I can buy the generic form for many, many dollars less than the combination meds.

I sort of do what every one else does....seconding guafenacin...mucinex and many other names...but guafenacin is the operative ingredient. Makes your nose run and that's what you want....I also take oral zicam...get the cherry flavor, not as nasty at the other.
And sudafed...And drink....water, tea, lemonade and more water.
But if you have a full blown sinus infection, you need an antibiotic....get thee to a DR...

I don't take anything, all that stuff gives me the hebe-jeebies. I take some Aleve, drink a lot of water, and take long hot steamy showers. I also take Zicam oral spray mist as soon as I feel a tiny sinus tickle. It has warded off the worst of anything that I have been exposed to.

My son tried the nasal Zicam and ended up losing his sense of smell. Thankfully it was not permanent.

I can't really help, but hope you start feeling better soon before the holiday is over!

I use the Netti Pot. I still have allergies and sometimes get stuffed up but then I use the Netti and it cuts it right back. I used to get sinus infections regularly and wow,,, I think it's been 3 or 4 years since I've had one. Not one sinus infection since I got the Netti pot. Just realized that. Cool. Creeped me out to use it at first, until I tried it, then it became quite easy and pretty fast for the relief it gives me. To tell the truth my allergies don't seem to bother me as much and this was a bad year. I do admit I only use it when it gets bad or I start to feel pressure, or can't breathe. LOL. I don't blame you for using whatever works. Sinus infections are the pits.

I put my head over the sink, cover it with a big towel and turn on the hot water. Easier than a hot shower that I can do several times a day. Hope you feel better soon.

Coconut-nj - I bought a Neti pot about 2 years ago, but never did get up the courage to use it. Everyone I know who uses one swears by it, as do you.

I just got over a head cold - mostly just took Advil, drank a lot of water, a little bit of Robitussin DM (with Guaifenesin). I always feel much worse lying down at night, so I prop myself up on pillows to sleep.

Alexa, I'm sorry you've had to endure that. I know from experience what agony sinus infections are! Mucinex D and Sudafed are the only things that help me (netti pot may help prevent, but doesn't help during)... but they take a while to kick in and it's important to keep them in your system. I'm usually a pretty happy person, but I seriously consider driving off a cliff when a sinus infection comes around (I haven't because there aren't any cliffs in FL, and by the time I found one, the pain would likely be over).
