Help finding printer driver

I am trying to help a couple set up their new computer and printer. The computer is a new emachines, win 7, 64 bit. That is about all I remember off hand. Everything has gone fine except the printer. It is an HP all in one model HP J3680. It also is new, except it doesn't accommodate Win 7. Only goes thru Vista. We spent quite awhile the other day trying to find the driver, if one is available, and I gave up after downloading one file I thought was it, but wasn't. It downloaded a lot of the HP stuff like solution center.

Anyway if someone could point me in the right direction, with simple instructions, I would very much appreciate it. I think we will be trying again on Monday.

If it's a new printer, it's under warranty. Why not just call HP?

Kudsu, Good idea. Why didn't I think of that? I sorta attempted to contact HP online the other day, but we ran out of time.

Oh, it was ordered by their son from someone on ebay. So would it still be under warranty thru HP I wonder.

Anyway, thanks for the suggestion. We'll try it on Monday.

pk, yes, frustrated is an understatement. Don't like spending so much time on such things that are probably easy. Did a lot of research with no resolve. Printer is hooked up to a desktop; DT hooked up to router. I don't "think" the printer is connected directly to router. Not sure what ethernet is. Laptop works wirelessly to the printer. Laptop is 8 mos old. Was working perfectly fine with printer until this new router was installed the other day. I have not tried plugging the printer directly to laptop. I'll try that in the morning. Brain is fried right now so I'll continue on this quest in the morning since I need the printer for work. Thanks for the help. Wonder if uninstalling the computer software from laptop, then reinstalling it again, will work.

Printer is not that old, about a year and a half. HP J6480, all in one. I have the Brother printer driver that came with it but when I try to install it I get that it needs file BH5140.PPD, insert CD that came with computer. The Brother is HL5140 and it's about 4 years old, never had a problem. It also could run on HP laserjet II driver and all the previous Brother drivers I have, V-8, V-10 which were installed through DOS. And, yes, it is a DOS and windows compatible printer. The HP is wireless and is the only printer I can use at this time. I'm burned out on spending so much time trying to get this to work, 8-9 hours with phone tech support over the last two weeks. HP now says it is a hardware problem and another printer is on the way, for a fee. They had little to offer even with the files they deleted, and truthfully, the last tech was just too hard to understand and I got tired of having him repeat his answers. I haven't tried to reinstall the drivers through DOS. They were there before I bought this last Brother laser printer as I had done most of my work in DOS. And I had also used them with win XP without additional tweeking, although were slower when used through windows until I added them to the windows programs. You probably don't need to know all this, LOL. My computer is an HP and it's the one that is "old", about 4-5 years. HP says it's old, amazing! One tech suggested WE may have to reinstall windows, I said No, NO, NO.

Usually any file in a temp folder thats over a couple days old.. I usually have no problems deleting. If I'm concerned for some reason I just add OLD on the end of its file extension. I ocasionally search .*old and clean up those gathering dust. I use slimware.com / slimdrivers to update drivers if I cant find them, or figure out which one at the motherboard manufacturers site. Always make a special restore point before doing any driver installs.

It amuses me that this person had said that he/she could not connect to the internet, but many of the replies first advice was 'to go on the internet'. HuH! However, we know this person must have had an alternate site to access the internet else he/she could not have posted this query. I was thinking to advise to look around for the disk that came with the computer or motherboard, but as I scanned down the replies, I see that was already discovered. It might be a good idea to visit the site of your coputer supplier and look for updates to this driver. Good luck and happy roaming.

Janette the link below shows 2 files for download for that printer. The first is just the drivers for the printer at 127 megs. The other is the full suite of programs for that particular model and is 253 megs in size. Your choice which you use.

Also, as a last resort you may try connecting the printer to the system and let W7 detect it. It may have a driver in the .inf folder suitable for the identified printer. The downside is the printer could be limited to its functionality.

Reminder: Assuming it it a USB printer be sure to connect it to the system only when directed.

I am not sure how old that model is, and unless it was bought through a regular vendor, it may not technically be under warranty. However, I have several HP printers and have had good luck -- at least in the past -- calling them and getting tech support on items I've had for more than a year.

Thank you each and every one for your help. I went over today and (hopefully) got the printer working. When I connected the printer to the system, as damccoy suggested, it updated itself and seems to be working fine. I think I was just anticipating problems because the system requirements for the printer indicated it wasn't compatible with win 7, and I was trying to be prepared.

Good for you.

Did you by chance test the scan and copy functions as to how they work with the system; saving and locating, i.e.? These are the services which can be limited when using a Windows driver.

We didn't test the scan after it was connected to the internet. I emailed her suggesting that she copy and scan and let me know. I'm not sure what you mean by saving and locating, tho.
I appreciate your reminding me to do that.
