Help, cannot reinstall printer driver

I've been merrily using my brother printer now for a few years, no problems. Have been having problems with another brand printer-scanner and their tech support deleted a lot of files in my computer. Now my printer doesn't have a driver. I have the cd that came with it but it cannot install it as it's missing a file called BR5140.PPD, "that came with the computer". I don't recall getting a windows CD, instead was instructed to make a restore DVD, which I did. Can anyone help. I looked on some sites for this file and before downloading I get the message that some of these files may cause problems, so I'm here, again, for your sage advice!

check to see if that file might still be in your recycle bin if they did not empty it then what they deleted could still be in there.

I looked there but there were far fewer files than what were deleted. Are there levels of files, if so how are they displayed? I didn't see them empty the recycle bin, however.

I have an HP 3210 PhotoSmart and there is a problem with the driver included in Windows XP. This glitch only happens under a certain set of conditions. Here's my work-around. It may work for you, too. After the computer has thoroughly finished booting, install the printer again. (Wait until your security software has finished its startup checks. Often, this runs in background, but will interfere with many operations until it has finished.) Install your printer as a second printer. 1. Open the Control Panel, then open "Printers" 2. Right click in the printer panel and choose install a printer. 3. Follow the Wizard. 4. When asked, use the existing driver (if it is the correct one). 5. After the new install is fnished, there will be two printers of the same kind showing in the printer panel. The one with the check mark is the one you just installed; The other one was the first install at boot up. 6. Right click on the unchecked printer icon and delete it. Close all panels and try the printer/scanner. One possible cause is the communication link between the computer and printer. This has to be a 2-way data link. You are probably ok on this item if you are using a USB cable. If you have an older printer with a parallel port, the parallel port on your computer must be a 2-way port, and the 2-way capability must be enabled. Another possibillty: The scanner software has not been installed. Software for the printer and scanner should have been included with the printer. If this was missing or damaged, you may be able to download a copy from the printer manufacturer. Beware these files are big and will take considerable time over a dial-up connection.

I can certainly sympathize with your situation...I have been without a printer for many months now because the ink cartridges are so expensive. I have a Canon Multipass 550 which has been a lifesaver in the past...being able to fax, copy and print...then when you do breakdown to buy one...install it and it still says empty cartridge, you really want to scream. But get this...the cartridge isn't the problem...it's the print head...to the tune of $50 or so and this is the third time I have replaced it and lord only knows how many cartridges were full before I wised up! Now get this....those print heads can be washed in your kitchen sink, dried on the counter and reinstalled...I sure am glad I saved the other two, i'll try that next time! But, now...I can't get the printer to print everything on the page....it prints one or two lines of the document, then skips a good paragraph size area and picks up the print again......any suggestions! and of course, it doesn't help that the manual is online and no hard copy is provided...I'm ready to do the old uninstall/reinstall thing and see if that helps! Technology sucks....here today, obsolete before noon the next day! and it wasn't a cheapee either...about $250- $300 smack a roos 2-3 years ago! Even with the cheapees....you spend a fortune on ink, that's were they make the money i guess! So what do I have to lose if the washing dosen't work......blank pages! I would try recycling (starting and stopping) the print spooler and RPC services if I were you. Open Control Panel and then open Administrative Tools and then Services. The services are in alpha order so find Print Spooler, right click on it and select Stop,,,wait until it's stopped, then right click and select Start. Repeat the step with Remote Procedure Call (RPC). Try again to install the printer, by unplugging the USB from the computer side, restarting Windows and then plugging it back in. If the steps to clear the print spooler don't work, there are some more detailed instructions for doing this through the run line that I can provide if needed.

If you have updated your operating system recently, that may be a clue. You may have gotten a new printer driver that is incompatible. Also, check your printer installation (system properties > Hardware) for the driver in use for your printer. If all else fails, you could uninstall the printer, reload the software for it, and then reinstall. Be sure to read the instruction for installing the software. Often, a certain order of events is required, for example, do not connect the printer until after the software has installed. These instructions are usually in the 'read me' file on the software disk. If you have an HP printer, look at its preferences before printing. When you click to print, a panel should pop up and the normal procedure is to click "ok", but instead, click on "properties" and take look. What shows up on the first appearance of the properties panel are the default settings for the printer. You may find your problem there. If the defaults are incorrect, you can temporarily change those in this properties panel, but the printer may revert to the default settings for the next print job. The default settings are set up during the 'printer install' process. (See Control panel > Printers and Faxes)

Including the printer model would help. Especially as this is an older printer.

Have you checked the Brother site for a driver? If you do an internet search for "driver for brother printer," for example, you will get lots of hits. As owbist suggested, the printer model, plus operating system, would help.
"..their tech support deleted a lot of files in my computer.." You might get some assistance from the questionable tech support that you think wiped away your driver.

Printer is not that old, about a year and a half. HP J6480, all in one. I have the Brother printer driver that came with it but when I try to install it I get that it needs file BH5140.PPD, insert CD that came with computer. The Brother is HL5140 and it's about 4 years old, never had a problem. It also could run on HP laserjet II driver and all the previous Brother drivers I have, V-8, V-10 which were installed through DOS. And, yes, it is a DOS and windows compatible printer. The HP is wireless and is the only printer I can use at this time. I'm burned out on spending so much time trying to get this to work, 8-9 hours with phone tech support over the last two weeks. HP now says it is a hardware problem and another printer is on the way, for a fee. They had little to offer even with the files they deleted, and truthfully, the last tech was just too hard to understand and I got tired of having him repeat his answers. I haven't tried to reinstall the drivers through DOS. They were there before I bought this last Brother laser printer as I had done most of my work in DOS. And I had also used them with win XP without additional tweeking, although were slower when used through windows until I added them to the windows programs. You probably don't need to know all this, LOL. My computer is an HP and it's the one that is "old", about 4-5 years. HP says it's old, amazing! One tech suggested WE may have to reinstall windows, I said No, NO, NO.

Brother is very good about updating and keeping driver files available for their products. I suggest going to their site and searching under the model and number of your printer for the driver files for your operating system. As for the HP printer, can't help you there except suggest you go to their site and under "support and drivers" enter your printer model number, and all the driver files for it should be available there. I have downloaded and installed drivers for several different HP products from their support site.

HP tech support has downloaded drivers for my printer but none worked to make it scan. They finally concluded I had a hardware problem and are replacing it, at a fee of course. I'll give the Brother site a try, maybe they also have an email support. Thanks everyone.
