I was able to connect with HP online support this morning.

It took some time..but the printer is now working... Yay!

I still wonder if I need a new router to stop this dropping of my IP...it's a pain to have to reconnect all the time.

do you by any chance have AVG as your antivirus? it was causing a lot of those kinds of problems.

Check all your cables make sure they are plugged in securely and also make sure they do not look damaged especially the plugs.

when you power down that router do you follow the proper sequence for powereing up? you should power down all computers, unplug from the power the modem and router, wait 5 mins or so then in this order do the power up, first the modem plug it in and let it light up fully, wait, plug in the router let it light up fully, wait, plug in and power up your main desktop, then power up any other computers. That way every thing has all the new reset settings as it should.

I use Avast antivirus. Also use Window's firewall and have Malwarebytes and SuperAntispyware.

Next time I lose my connection, I'll go slower and make sure I power as you say. Sometimes I have just unpluged the modem, high speed cable and eternet then repluged them back in with power being last.

Curious here. I uder stand the recommend sequence. However, why the 5 minute delay after a complete shut down of system and peripherals? Normally a 10 second electronic reset is all that is ever required. If the system was staying up I could see the delay of the modem and router as it has been reported that some system applications may take as long as the five minutes to completely disable even though they have vanished from the screen and the Task Manager. I too know solid state circuits are not an issue, so I am again curious.

Perhaps it is a reason I should learn for the future.

That was what I was always instructed and it is what I have always done, I have no idea if it has to be exactly that many minutes but when the guy was here installing my cable modem and stuff at the new house that is what he told me too.(I had never had a cable modem to deal with) Other than that I don't know why. Maybe it is just easier for them to say 5 mins LOL
I don't know much about electrical stuff and circuits so I just wait plenty of time to let things do what ever it is they need to do.

Being an antique DUN user still unfortunately I am not totally on-board with understanding all the modem/DSL/cable terminology, just the basic use theory. If the goal is to increase the possibility of an IP change, that makes sense.

I had no clue either as to why 5 mins, and I'm an Electronics Tech by trade, don't do it anymore.

I Goggled "5 Mins for Modem reset" and got lucky with the information provided..

I understand. I myself post a website quote naming its source whenever I can. It allows the members to do follow ups and confirmations to the provided information if they so desire. Sometimes I can't though as I do a lot of reading and can't always relocate the source.
