Did I make the right decision??

We bought several appliances at Lowe's this weekend during their 20% off sale. The most expensive ones we bought are Samsung french door refrigerator (~$2000), GE Profile induction cooktop (~$1400), Bosch Integra 500 dishwasher (~$800).....don't have the model numbers in front of me but wanted to give you a general idea of quality & price.

The salesman asked if we wanted to get the extended warranty (5 yrs he said although the receipt says 4 yrs so I think it starts AFTER the manufacturer's 1-yr warranties expire). The extended coverage was about $280 for these 3 appliances and we bought it. He said A&E factory service would come out if we ever had a problem. I came home and read some not-so-flattering things about A&E.

So did we make the right decision to buy the extended coverage or is it a waste of money & should we try to cancel it (appliances won't be delivered for at least another month)??

The quality of A&E depends upon where you live. I'm in a smaller market and their people have been great. We bought from Lowe's because the local retailer's best repair guy was hired by A&E and the service of the local retailer has really gone down hill.

enjoy... as far as box store brands go, HOP>MTD. I got an ariens from home depot, same color, probably made in the same plant in orangeburg, sc. They are more reliable then people make them out to be. Just do routine maintainance.

I'm sure you'll be happy with it and can't imagine there would be much difference in picture quality between these two cameras. Like you, I have a nice Canon that I rarely take out of the pack (it takes great pictures when I do!) and a small Nikon that I keep in my purse at all times. I love the pictures I take with the little cheapie Nikon wouldn't give it up for anything!

Is low E cost effective on north facing patio doors?

Hi, we are up in south SF Bay area. Another consideration for low-E is heat rejection in the summer. We have a door facing NNE. No roof overhang but a large oak next to the house. The door gets may be two hours of rising sun and then shaded all day long in the summer. Our temperature does rise to low-100's in the summer. Even when shaded, the hot air temperature can work its way into the house depending on the door and window material. The old wooden painted door would heat up and we can feel the heat coming through all day long spread over the entire door. That living area got rather warm, to about 20 degrees below temperature outside. So if it is 100 outside, we are cooking at 80 inside. After switching the door to a low-E French, clad exterior, wood interior, things changed dramatically. I have no concrete proof that the low-E is the sole factor but the only change were the doors. The inside is now able to remain 30 degrees cooler than outside during hottest part of the day. The wood frame of the door is warm but less so now and the glass portion is cool to the touch. So instead of a whole door heating up, there is only a bit of warmth coming through the frames and practically none through the glass surface. We open everything before sunrise to chill the house down to 60. The thick cement floor cools off quickly in the cold morning air. We then close everything at sunrise. When it is 100 outside by 3PM, we are a chilly 70 inside, without A/C in that area. We do know that double-pane without low-E will transmit heat. Our leftover Milgard vinyl does that well. The glass will be warm to the touch, unlike low-E glass. Not sure it this description will work as well for you but I hope it helps your analysis.

I agree with you, completely. Over 6 months ago, I made the decision not to subject Foxy (also 15) to general anesthesia, which would be necessary to biopsy a mass in her stomach that we could see on ultrasound. Drs said that it was probably lymphoma. She had also lost weight, and thyroid was not working. Dr put her on steroid - Prednisone. I felt that, at her age, the anesthesia was a risk in itself. I talked to the oncologist, and since she was responding to the steroid (prednisone), I/we decided to watch and wait. She also had thyroid problem, and was on meds....but later had to have surgery to remove an infected mammary and I gave permission to also remove the thyroid, and now she is very active, has gained more weight, and is normal in every way, Still no biopsy. Over two months ago, we (Dr and I) decided to wean her off the prednisone. For the past month, she is off all meds and is happy and healthy. I bumped into her Dr. a couple of days ago....and she said she had VM interns training under her, and she had mentioned Foxy as a case of not everything being what you first think you see.

the service you get from A&E depends on the man not the company some are good some are horrendous, but the company in general does a reasonable job, in the end if you have a warranty and A&E can not fix it they will replace it.

Thanks for your thoughts. The salesman did mention replacement or a Lowe's gift card for the value of the appliance. I printed out the warranty when I got home....still need to re-read the fine print! I'm glad some experiences have been okay.

Would appreciate any additional points of view!

You know, of course, that now that you have purchased the extended warranties, your appliances will be trouble-free for years, whereas if you had not, you would find you have a kitchen-full of lemons.

Seriously, its a gamble, and pretty much a matter of personal choice. Some people sleep better with the extended warranty, and for them it's worth it. Others, believing that the manufacturers and retailers know the odds and make a ton of money on the ext warranties, prefer to take their chances relying on only the standard warranty.

We generally take the latter approach. But we did buy an extended warranty on a BMW some years ago, on which we came out ahead.

I haven't read the A&E threads but I imagine they're bad. But I'd have to think not "all" A&E service is bad. And relatively speaking, $280 for three appliances is pretty cheap. Especially since, at least in my experience, if sh;t goes wrong with a HD or Lowes they've got enough cash in their pockets to make it right rather than listen to you scream. My vote is keep the contracts.

Thanks for all of the input! Yep, I agree that Murphy's law is pretty likely to happen if we did not purchase it. :-) Still, I hope it never gets used.
