Is anyone using Audacity with Vista?

I use Audacity in XP and love it. I'm searching for a new notebook and am wondering how Audacity works with Vista. I am torn between ordering a Dell with XP or having the liberty to choose from different systems which only come with Vista... I will be buying a notebook sound card so that I will be able to connect to the line in port. I plan to connect a cable from a PA system's mixer into the notebook and record live in Audacity.

I'm very concerned about compatibility issues with Vista and will greatly appreciate any input you have.

All I know is Audacity works fine on my windows 98 system where it does NOT work right on my windows XP computer.
I think the sound system on my XP is preventing Audicity from working right.

I can record and play back OK but can not choose line in etc. from the drop down arrow which is nonfunctional on my XP!

I just installed AudaCity 1.3.3 on Vista Ultimate to find out for you.
No compatibility issues at all, everything went fine.

Thank you for the reply. Things have not improved and I've been doing research to find out why. It's only me, one guy, so maybe it's my problem. T2450 Processor Speed 2.00GHz I have a very old (12-15 years) Pentium 3 PC 1000Mhz 1GB RAM. No, the performance won't be diminished by the dual boot because the 2 operating systems are installed on separate partitions, so you only boot to the system of your choice. You only have 1 system running at a time. Dual boot is really kind of neat, when you boot up you get the choice of which os to use, use the up-down arrows to select one. Make 1 system your default, so you can boot and walk away and it will automatically load that system. I know they're starting to say 2GB RAM for Vista, but 1GB has been fine for me. I had a cpu & ram meter as a sidebar gadget on Vista and the ram never used over 42% The only problem you may have after the XP install is you might lose the Vista bootloader, so Vista won't boot, but that is easily solved with a small program called VistabootPro that will install the bootloader back on Vista. I had an Acer notebook in my hands the other day, seemed fine to me, even though the lady had about a 100 programs running at startup that weren't necessary. Is that a 17" screen, wow.

Ta Dah! She resent it....she doesn't know what happened....but turns out it's just the Cheesecake Factory recipe.... I would have sworn that the topping was something like cream cheese sweetened and thinned with sour cream....but she says it was just whipped cream. Cheesecake Factory Pumpkin Cheesecake Bonnie Prep time: 30 minutes Serves: 10-12 Cooking time: 65-75 minutes Crust: 1Â½ cups graham cracker or ginger snaps (I like Â½ of each) 5 T. butter, melted 1 T. sugar Filling: 3-8oz. pkgs. cream cheese, softened 1 C. canned pumpkin 3 eggs Â½ t. cinnamon Â¼ t. nutmeg Â¼ t. allspice Topping; 1 C. heavy cream Â½ C. sugar 1 t. white vanilla Â½ C. chopped pecans Mix crust ingredients together, just until coated and crumbly. Press onto the bottom and two-thirds of the way up the sides of an 8" spring form pan. Bake for 5 minutes at 350F. Set aside. Combine cheese, sugar and vanilla in large bowl, mix until smooth with an electric mixer. Add pumpkin, eggs, and spices and beat until smooth and creamy. Pour into the crust. Bake for 60-70 minutes or until the top turns a bit darker. Remove from oven and allow to come to room temperature, then refrigerate. Just before serving, whip the cream, sugar and white vanilla. After cake has thoroughly chilled, add the whipped cream topping and sprinkle nuts over the cream. Remove the pan sides and cut.

Thank you for posting your daughter's flooring pictures. She has a beautiful place. I am going to buy this floor. I selected the "Hammer Glow" which is a medium brown. I hope I don't regret not going with the RInging Anvil. Geesh, It is so hard to decide. Especially when it is going through an entire house (except for the bathrooms).

It was the 1.3.3 beta version.
I could try and install the older version just to see if it will install.
No, didn't try to record anything.
The only experience I've had with recordng was with Acoustica "Spin It Again" on XP, where I recorded a friends cassette tapes and put on a cd.

Sorry, Randy... When I read through your first reply just now, I saw that you did tell me which version you tried. Audacity warns that the beta version is not yet stable, but it said that about its previous versions, too... However, I never had any trouble with crashes, etc.

It looks like I should be able to consider going with Vista. Thank you!

I've just installed Audacity, version 1.2.6, in Windows Vista Home Premium and found that recording doesn't work. The problem concerned a lack of recording device within the operating system because the device was disabled by default.

Windows Vista: Enabling a Recording Device.

Select : 'Start : Control Panel : Hardware and Sound : Sound'

The small 'Sound' window includes 'Playback', 'Record' and 'Sounds' tabs. Select the 'Record' tab.

Within the 'Record' tab, within the 'Select a recording device below to modify settings:' RIGHT-Click within this blank area and select 'Show Disabled Devices'

It is likely that the 'Stereo Mix' associated with the sound card is disabled. RIGHT-Click and select 'Enable'. While here, select the 'Properties' of the Stereo Mix' device.

Within the Properties there is likely to be a 'Levels' tab. Select this and ensure that the level is reasonable high - otherwise the recordings will be at a very low/quiet level.

OK this and return to Audacity. It should now record.

Other Issues:

I suspect that enabling the Stereo Mix feature of the sound card could cause problems with some of Vista's multimedia playing software. The intention of Vista is to stop users recording copyrighted materials! (And even if your use is legitimate, the secure pipe for media has been broken and might stop the media player working properly).

I'm glad you were able to get it to work for you, Andy. When I discovered it was impossible to get a dedicated line in port in an external sound card that was compatible with Vista, I purchased a laptop with XP. I ended up buying an audio interface which is serving my needs just fine.
