It may not be Vista that's the problem. DH uses OpenOffice, and I had to download a plugin so I could open one of his documents in MS Office. If Alexa doesn't have any luck with it, I'll try if you want.

Sometimes when I get something from someone who is not on a Mac, I cannot open the attachment because it doesn't have a .doc at the end of it. Usually, I can change the name of the doc myself to have a .doc at the end and sometimes it opens, and sometimes it doesn't.

If worse comes to worse, sending things as a pdf will generally work.

Frustrating when things don't work the way you want them to work!

Linda, if you ever do get the recipe, I'd love to see it. I followed a recipe I got online a couple years ago for pumpkin cheesecake and it was disappointing. I use Vista too, though I don't like it. What does it say when you try to open the file?

The operating system won't make any difference. It's the file type. What's the extension? (Meaning .doc, .odt, .rtf, etc)

It could be the file is corrupted too. I can open a number of different file types and would be glad to help out. MS Works is one that I might not be able to open unless Office will do it.

Most of the time someone who has Office 2007 and sends a file to someone who doesn't have it causes the problem on the "doesn't have it" side. You probably need an updated version of Windows. However, just get back to the person who sent it to you and ask them to save it in an older version of Word and resend it and it should be no problem.

The attachment is in word....says it's 24.1 KB and it had a "doc." extension.
When I open it it's blank....when I save it to a file...it doesn't save....when I hover over the saved file, it shows nothing.
I thought i had the latest version of word....perhaps not.
I did email the sender last night. I hope shew ill reply with a recipe I can read because it was a really wonderful cheese cake!
I do know that it had a cup of pumpkin, 3 packages of cream cheese and 3 eggs....the crust was crumbs with nuts and the topping was wonderful....looked like whipped cream but wasn't...I suspect cream cheese, cream and perhaps some sugar.
For sure I'll post it if I can lay hands on it in a form I can read.

Linda, I have Vista and use an older version of Word too. I know you have plenty of offers, but I'd be willing to try too!

I am limited in my computer abilities so I couldn't help with your problem, but I'd sure like the recipe once you do get it.

It may be possible that the file she sent was blank. You know, crazy things happen, we get interrupted or whatever.

Plenty of converters you can convert it back to .doc Word files.

I have 5 computers at home - don't ask LOL. We run Vista, Windows XP and believe it or not Windows 98. One of the computers is also a MAC. If you forward your email to me, I'll be happy to see what I can do to open it and get it in a usable format for you.

Ta Dah! She resent it....she doesn't know what happened....but turns out it's just the Cheesecake Factory recipe....
I would have sworn that the topping was something like cream cheese sweetened and thinned with sour cream....but she says it was just whipped cream.
Cheesecake Factory Pumpkin Cheesecake Bonnie

Prep time: 30 minutes Serves: 10-12
Cooking time: 65-75 minutes

Crust:
1½ cups graham cracker or ginger snaps (I like ½ of each)
5 T. butter, melted
1 T. sugar

Filling:
3-8oz. pkgs. cream cheese, softened
1 C. canned pumpkin
3 eggs
½ t. cinnamon
¼ t. nutmeg
¼ t. allspice

Topping;
1 C. heavy cream
½ C. sugar
1 t. white vanilla
½ C. chopped pecans

Mix crust ingredients together, just until coated and crumbly. Press onto the bottom and two-thirds of the way up the sides of an 8" spring form pan. Bake for 5 minutes at 350F. Set aside.

Combine cheese, sugar and vanilla in large bowl, mix until smooth with an electric mixer. Add pumpkin, eggs, and spices and beat until smooth and creamy. Pour into the crust. Bake for 60-70 minutes or until the top turns a bit darker. Remove from oven and allow to come to room temperature, then refrigerate.

Just before serving, whip the cream, sugar and white vanilla.

After cake has thoroughly chilled, add the whipped cream topping and sprinkle nuts over the cream. Remove the pan sides and cut.

Linda, if you still need help after all the offers above, let me know. My husband is a computer guru so he may be able to help. (I'm not too bad with computers, but I've never seen him fail at anything when it comes to computers.)
