Installing SP3 with AMD Processor

I have a HP computer with an AMD Processor and there were problems downloading and installing SP3 with this setup. I know that sometime in July Microsoft will not be updating security if you don't have SP3. Have they worked out the bugs with HP and AMD and is it safe for me to install SP3.

the sp3 file has not changed it is exactly the same, you should look up sp3 here on this forum for the threads where we have discussed it lately and the suggested methods.

check that thread, I posted several links to review including precautions to take and how and where to download the stand alone sp3 file from.

also visit the HP site enter your model number in the search area and then look through for any update info concerning sp3, HP did put out a fix for download for their issues.

I purchased the full Adobe Acrobat in 2006 from Adobe, installed & activated it the next day or two. I still use it as it is sufficient for my needs. I don't understand why I get the pop up because I never downloaded or installed a trial version of Acrobat. I forgot to mention that the pop up isn't triggered by every pdf. Don't know why. Will try phone support, but I have my doubts because of what my son told me about his son's new job on a computer help line. "Oh, I don't need to know anything about computers because you type in the question and the computer gives you the answer." (!)

Jane no doubt it will be an Apple commercial if it is not already! I saw one last night that could have been about this reboot over and over situation, have to admit those commercials are funny. IF you have your computers fully updated with all the windows updates and you do not want to tackle this now you do not have to (totally up to you), this is not a super critical update like sp2 was, it is rated moderate. There are some additional changes it makes to the system itself which microsoft would like people to install. But I know a lot of people have decided to at least wait some time to see if there might be some hotfixes that come out to handle some of the issues that are cropping up and there has been discussion in the microsoft forums that this time they may actually put out a hotfix for some of the problems prior to pushing out sp3 in auto update. So waiting is not a bad idea at this point. I would suggest though that you uninstall your IE 7 through add remove before you do install sp3, because if you do not you will not be able to do so at any time in the future and it also affects the ability to try to do fixes on IE7 should they be needed. You can just take it out, put in sp3 when you decide to, then put IE7 back. Or just stay as you are and continue getting your other regular critical windows updates. It is your choice. At this point in time they will not stop you from getting your windows updates just because you do not have sp3, so don't be concerned about that.

urlee the difference between the cd and getting it through your windows update is that with the cd you get the full install with windows update it is supposed to check your pc and give you just what you need but it seems more of the problems are happening to people who use windows update, so they are urging people to use one of the full methods. Now it could be that people using windows updates are not turning off all their antivirus and firewall and spyware protection when doing it that way which is definitely advised, when those things are not disabled first real issues can arise. However a word of caution, just because you use the cd does not mean or guarantee there will not be problems. The problem that is specific to people with AMD processors for example HAS to be addressed and the patch applied before any install of sp3 or those issues will happen. So it still means you have to do your homework and find out what has to be done to your pc prior to install if you choose to install it. Which is why we highly suggest backing up everything you do not want to lose or create an image of your system just in case the worst happens.

nope I am all current on windows updates except for sp3 and since what it does is mostly give you all the windows updates since sp2 I doubt I will add it. The minor core changes it makes are of no interest to me. IF at any point in time they make it a mandatory update to get further windows udpates I may add it but it is doubtful that will happen. If it were a major security update I would do it. That is a decision each person needs to make on their own once they have weighed the pros and cons.

Using the HP fix I was able to download and install SP3 after I had run into the rebooting loop with the AMD processor. So consult the HP site as RC suggests and you'll find the help you need there.

I have had SP3 on my HP computer since shortly after it was issued by using HP's instructions.

Ravencajun and grandms thanks for replying to my question. After updating my bios, device drivers etc, I went to the HP site and attempted to download and install the patch they have to prevent the AMD problem (sp37394).

It would not install and I got a message that read:

Your System does not meet the minumum requirements for this update. Update has been cancelled (9998)

And the explination,

The error displays when ...

the same or newer version of software is already installed (computer already has the updated software), the update requires certain hardware or software that is not installed on your computer (examples: keyboard replaced with a non-HP keyboard or Microsoft .NET software is not installed),the computer does not meet a certain minimum hardware or software requirement (examples: 4 GB minimum memory, 200 MB free disk space, or .NET version 2.0 required and 1.0 is installed) .

Usually, this error indicates the update is not needed for your computer and it should not be installed.

I have an AMD 64 X2 Dual Core Prodessor and 224 GB of free space.

I would appreciate any further suggestions that you could give me.

it sounds like possibly you got the update some how already, to be sure you could start a chat with HP chat, I have had good results with their chat.

I second the suggestion to use the HP chat. You might ask about the requirments re .NET software. Maybe you do not have that and it is needed.

Thanks to both ravencajun and grandms for your suggestion of going to HP chat. The technician from HP chat was able to get me to a special site to download and then install SP3. I've rebooted twice to make sure its OK, and everything is fine.

Once more, thank you both for pointing me in the right direction.
