It's been raining all day...pouring actually. I'm bored & have been thinking about where would be a fun long weekend get-a-way.

Here's my favorite cities...not in any particular order.

1.) Prettiest Cities

Why wasn't Santa Fe in your most fun foods list? They have some amazing restraunts there!
I too am bored at the moment....but also tired....so not going to take time to post cities....but I think NYC would be near the top for most but prettiest!
But how about KC, mo. in the Plaza area for one of the prettiest?

i'm not a literary person, but from what I can tell is that the style overall, reminds me of screenplay writing, e.g.: "Gathering up papers and his favorite plaid thermos, he tied them into a kerchief and fastened the satchel to the end of a stout length of devils walking stick. He stooped a final time to clear the doorway of his former lair. Tired, but resolute, he crossed the clearing, pausing briefly against an over pruned Shishigashira to catch his breath." What I mean is that the writing style is very descriptive in terms of both actions and local, and less informative psychologically in terms of the character. Psychological states of the character, I guess, are inferred through these very discriptive, or highly visual/cinematic passages - as in a screenplay. This last passage for instance can be viewed in terms of cinema as a shot. Where sometimes visual clues such as location and character gestures play a larger role in the telling of the story, rather than the actual character dialogue or narration: "Behind him, in the eerie calm of sunset, a single unobserved green leaf made no sound as it slowly drifted to settle neatly on a background of uncharacteristically red moss beneath the maple, signaling a natural, albeit most curious end to a tenured era." ...it's cinematic.

Now I know that I typed up a response to this thread but apparently never posted it. Sherry, I really, really enjoyed reading the story that accompanied your gift. You put together an amazing package for Jayne. I'm so glad you sent her a pizza stone. I know that she will get a lot of use out of that. We took Tauck which was recently named the top river cruise tour by travel and leisure mag. This was our 6th tour with them...they spoil you for anyone else. You will always see both shores and the boat is so smooth...about the only time we felt any motion was when they were going sideways to dock. Far less bumpy than driving. We talked with others about Viking, and while they are initially cheaper, they have so many add ons (you pay for side trips and tips, etc.) that by the time you're done, I don't think you're better off. Further, they pack more people on the same size boat so their cabins are smaller. And Tauck always does exclusives that no other tour company can do...like dinner on castle hill in prague with a private tour of the museum, or dinner at the palais palivicini, which is open only to Tauck. I have no interest in a big cruise ship at all, but this was a great way to travel.

In 1955, we moved from Long Beach to Fremont; then two years later back to Long Beach; then a year and a half later back to Fremont. Zoris and go-aheads were terms we had to learn when we moved; I know there was a third term in California for the rubber sandals, but I'm not sure now what it was (perhaps thongs). In any case, even if we'd used thongs years earlier in California, it was one of the mysterious terms we encountered when we moved to Connecticut in 1965 (like gross and other words I no longer recall. I always assumed zori was a Japanese word, and after all these years, the Internet says I was right about that. Growing up, a soda was always pop with ice cream in it (LOL). In my childhood, sodas were something on the menu that we never ordered and thus never understood. We did drink root beer with ice cream, but that was always a root beer float. When I went to college, my friends had discussions about regional words and pronunciations (how many different vowels in Mary, merry, and marry?). We also debated the general terms for carbonated beverages. I ended up adopting soda to refer to fizzy drinks, much to the bemusement of my parents and brother -- and later my co-workers in the Chicago area.

I don't know. The words "favorite" and "city" have never gone together for me. That being said, I'd love to visit Portland, OR, because my DD lives there, and it just sounds like a city I could possibly like - maybe even love, as she does.

Sally, I'm with you. I'm not very excited about cities in general and I hate to shop for things like clothes, purses, home furnishings, so they have to have something else to lure me there like cooking utensils or great food or farm markets and cattle auctions, LOL. I love to visit Chicago, but I'm always glad to go home.

Places I'd still like to see? Boston and New Orleans and I can't tell you why I want to go either place, LOL. Washington D.C. because I want to go back to the Smithsonian, Philadelphia because I would love to see Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, etc., New York City so I can visit Carol (dishesdone) and New Hampshire so I can meet San!

San Antonio for things to do and great restaurants.
Pre-Katrina New Orleans--so glad we saw it when we did.
And that's about it--I don't like to shop, don't like crowds particularly, and would rather stay at home!

I've been to Boston 3 times, 1st to visit a college, next to take DD to said college the following year, and finally, to see her graduate. The few days we had each visit were not nearly enough time to see all there is to see, but they were fun visits just the same, and I recommend allowing time to see it all, but be prepared to pay through the nose. Everything there is expensive. DD lived there for 4 years, was thrilled to go there at first, but by the end of the 4 years of college couldn't wait to leave Boston. I think Boston is one of those cities that fit the category of great place to visit but wouldn't want to live there.
