White Subway Tile tub/shower remodel
Comments (45)Hi! The big window in the shower is part of my 1985 tract house and appears to be a problem for most homeowners in my neighborhood. The original installation was prone to leaks, with water penetrating the inside of the wall. Many neighbors use a shower curtain along that wall, but I wanted to have an unadorned window. We gutted the room, and hired a local "vinyl" window company to install the picture window. It's dual pane with patterned (Industrex) glass. The interior of the window was not rated to be used in a wet environment. The installer caulked areas he thought would be vulnerable. There is no way to know if water is going inside the window, but to my eye I think it's doing great. My tile installer used "old school" techniques, putting wire lath up with layers of mortar which he leveled perfectly. The tile is perfectly square and sits flush against the window. Along the bottom edge, he used sheets of vichithane (sp?) which is a sticky rubber product. He over-did that area to make sure water never entered the wall. The marble sill sits on top of the waterproofing system. A window in the shower is great and I love the design, however, I can't shower at night with the light on. I have no problems with a "peep show" as long as I shower in the morning with the light coming in from the outside. Hope that helps! P.S. The local window company convinced us they manufacture windows, but I suspect they are the same as big-box store retrofit vinyl windows. The rest of the house we used Renewal by Andersen and they're much better....See MoreAir Tubs: Bain Ultra vs Oceania??
Comments (20)Wish I'd seen this link sooner but I'll post my 2 cents... The air issue is a biggie! We have the Bain Ultra Amma and it came with dual back heaters. When we installed it, the back warmers didn't heat and the air jets were cold. The tech support was fantastic and they immediately shipped me a new motor. Unfortuantely, It didn't help much. I guess remotely locateing the motor just has the air cool too much making the run?? I LOVE the chromatherapy. I generally don't use the air jets in winter b/c it cools the water in the tub too quickly. :-( So I basically have a beautiful large bathtub with really cool lighting. Their tech support is awesome but unfortunately the air is what it is... An inline heater is not an option with this tub b/c both ports are used up with the worthless back heaters... Here is a link that might be useful: my tub...See MoreMaxx optik air tub

Comments (8)Make sure you and your husband sit in several of these in a showroom. They can be difficult to get in and climb out of, due to the oval shape with high sides. Keep in mind the slippery when wet factor. You don’t want to end up with a very expensive floor ornament you don’t use cause it’s a pain to get in and out of. Also, the freestanding plumbing pipes coming out of the floor is one more thing to clean around. I like a drop-in tub that is undermounted to sit within a built-up deck structure. Easier to climb in and out of. And, I like me a glass of wine and candles with a hot bath on a winter night, and the deck provides a place for them. If you want it to be a high-end installation, have the deck and surround be marble....See Morematdrew
