Free-standing tub vs. drop in tub
Comments (6)We are going with a freestanding in our new master bath both because we like the looks and also with our layout it worked better. Given the cost of a good tiling job I'm not sure a built-in would have been less expensive than a standalone. We had 2 drop-in tubs (one to be removed with shower stall) and one of them still in-- acrylic-- which we put in 12 years ago and somewhat regret now because it flexes and the grout cracked over time so it has needed a lot of maintenance. (this is mostly because of the material we chose). But when our kids were younger they loved the bubbles!...See Morefree-standing glass block backsplash?
Comments (13)Lol, fori. I knew I couldn't be the only one thinking of this, so I was surprised that I didn't find much online. I will probably go for the glass panel. Reedy/seeded/rainy glass would be great. We have a glass shop literally around the corner from us, so I'll ask them if they do those specialty glasses. They actually made us a new panel for our jalousie window for free, so they are good people to deal with. xoldtimecarpenter, those ideas would be lovely, but we want to keep this simple and cheap, since it's only a temporary solution. We're also not giving up any counter space, since the backsplash will be installed on the narrow strip behind the sink (pic below). We have lived with the sink like this for 11 years now, b/c we keep putting off the kitchen remodel, and it's driving me crazy. We've managed OK by being careful with the water, but it does occasionally spray back there, and sometimes water pools up on that strip and then drips down. The reason we HAVE to put up a backsplash now is temporary fix #2: putting a cabinet (the white one in the upper right corner of the picture) on the other side of the sink, which will be almost flush with the countertop. That will allow us to fit a bigger table at the back of the kitchen so my boys can eat all their meals but dinner in the kitchen (we just redid our dining room and are using cloth tablecloths instead of vinyl, and the messes are driving me crazy). The paint on that white cabinet flakes easily, plus we will be putting stuff on it, so we can't have water splashing back there anymore. Thanks for all the ideas! I hope DH is up for this DIY project! And in case anyone is interested, the faucet is a Kohler (at least, I think it is). We love it. It also has a spray setting, and it's a pull-down....See MoreTub Help - freestanding tub cast iron soaker or acrylic with hydro?
Comments (3)I had an acrylic pedestal tub in my last home, it was beautiful but it did not retain heat as long as I would like. Also it had to be reinstalled and I think they put some type of foam/cement in the base and then it did not budge at all. I also need to make a decision on a tub in the next two weeks and I will likely go with a pedestal acrastone tub ( American Bath Factory Nob Hill) . My first choice would be a victoria albert elwick if I had the space, I need 60" and I can not find a pedestal style I like in a 60" length with this company. Please post what you decide to go with....See MoreHelp me find a freestanding soaking tub 66" with deck mount $1k
Comments (16)@cpartist that's very pretty. Thank you. Obviously my look is not contemporary like you're looking for but I wanted you to see it can be done. I thought about doing a ledge and then wall mount...that way i can have products candles etc... That could be quite attractive. do you find issues cleaning? anything to worry about. It's a bit tight behind my tub but it's doable. I'm glad I didn't get a clawfoot tub so no dirt under the tub. folks tried to talk me out of freestanding. but i just want that look now. i've had drop in for almost 20 years. I'm with you. My last tub was drop in and I do love the look of this one. Was talked out of a free standing in my condo and regretted it. good to know about the faucets.. There are lots of choices. i can't buy tub drilled unless comes with the faucet...is that not an issue? Yes you can. I had the choice at Signature Hardware to have it drilled or not and didn't have to pay for a cheap and poorly made faucet. i read that acrylic retains heat better than cast iron. plus cost. No cast iron holds heat more. Yes cost is an issue. It's a bit more expensive. The other problem is the cast iron tubs are more traditionally styled. My drop in tub was acrylic and it was fine. I was just curious. Here are a few that have tub drillings and no faucets with it: https://www.signaturehardware.com/bathroom/bathtubs/freestanding-tubs/boyce-freestanding-acrylic-tub-1.html https://www.signaturehardware.com/bathroom/bathtubs/freestanding-tubs/70-ashington-acrylic-freestanding-tub.html This is the one I have: https://www.signaturehardware.com/bathroom/bathtubs/freestanding-tubs/67-aiden-cast-iron-dual-tub-on-beveled-plinth.html...See MoreRita / Bring Back Sophie 4 Real
