Desktop or laptop? If desktop-have you ever had the cover off to blow the dust out of the case? No? Then you should pick up a computer duster (can of air) at your office supply store and give it a thorough blow-out. A dust build-up would cause it to overheat which would certainly cause a problem like this. It's also possible you have a hardware problem-maybe a bad memory chip.

I would check the event viewer for red flags and messages,
look in control panel under administrative tools for event viewer then go through the various sections in there looking for red and yellow flagged items, you can then double click any of those entries to get more info to be able to research.

There are (unfortunately) any number of variables with this.
Did you just add anything (software or hardware)?, any warning messages prior? Have you disconnected all usb devices and do you get the same error then? Is your drive almost full? Those were the easier ones.

Based on the 005 error, I would check the ram if I had it in the shop. If you have more than one module and are comfortable doing so, I'd remove all but one and go through a process of elimination that way.

The problem could be dust as I have a cat litter box in the room and have had problems before. I'll try that computer duster. Because of the cat's age, I cant' move her box to another room!

If you use a can of compressed air as Azinoh suggests either place your finger on the processor fan or better still remove the fan to blow out the heat sink. If this is particularly dirty be sure to take the computer outside and clean it. I like to use a small pure bristle brush when doing this to help move stubborn grunge.

You might also blow into the power supply but do not remove the fan guard and go in as the thing might give you a nasty jolt.

How old is the cat? I have one that's 16+ rescue cat. There is a dust free litter available. In order to change the litter gradually add a little more of the dust free litter until it's all dust free. Cat was found under a porch by girl friend who delivers mail. She knew the cat as a kitten and watched it grow, then one day she realized the cat had been left out side more then usual that's when she discovered the owner had disappeared so she brought the cat home. here kitty kitty!

Cleaning the computer and its components

this is a good guide. If the tower is down on the floor you might consider raising it up higher either on top of the desk or on top of a riser of some type. Being right on the floor is a dust trap.

I wouldn't try opening up the computer case so I may call someone to repair it. I do have it up on a table as I had trouble with the cat litter last year when the computer was on the floor.

Zep, I did consider the dust free litter but it is so expensive and I thought raising the computer would end the problem. I may just have to try it though. I use Fresh Step which is supposedly 99 1/2% dustless. That's a joke. My cat is 13 so your cat has me beat by a few years.

Computer is working fine today. Go figure...

Eviem I understand you reluctance to get inside your computer case but this is nothing more than simple maintenance. Shut down and remove the power cord from the rear. Look at the rear of your tower on the left side, there should be 2 screws or a proprietary gadget holding the left side on. Remove those screws, slide the left side panel back and off. Now have a look. Half the job is already done now.

Look in at the bigger board fasten to the right side and you will see a fan raised off the motherboard. Look between the blades to see if it is filled with dust. If so place a finger on the fan and squirt your compressed air can liberally around the fan and underneath. Put the side back on, connect the power cord and start the computer and you are done apart from putting the can of air away. Simple huh? Why spend $60 and up for a less than 5 minute job.
