Alright, I checked out "Application" first & found: a whole bunch of "Information", many "Warning" which had "Symantec AntiVirus" a few times, in large batches during a single day, "Ms Installer" a couple/few times, in batches of probably two, & "Userenv" everyday, in batches of two, right around the time I usually shut down the computer. Then I downloaded & installed, & I'm positive I ran, the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service. Then I tried shutting down & the computer still hung at "Saving Settings" & needed turned off manually! The other thing I got under "Application" was a few "Error" & each one was "Application Error". I checked out "Security" but there was only "Success audit". I checked out "Internet Explorer" and there was nothing. I checked out "System" and there was a whole bunch of "Information", several "Error" & each of those were "Service Control Manager", & several "Warning" & most of those were "tcpip", plus a few "W32Time". I haven't checked out any of the other "Warning" & "Error". I don't know what to do b/c I'm computer-illiterate. I think I'll just print all this out after submitting my reply & take such to Best Buy during the computer's annual checkup under our performance service plan/extended warranty, which is in May & let the Geek Squad deal with it.

I bought my daughter a Dell Inspiron 1000(Win XP), when she started college. It is now about 3 1/2 years old. For the last several months-it has done this same thing. Usually after several tries-I get it to boot into Windows and I do a system restore-back to a date when it was working properly. It will then boot with no problems for a few weeks-then it will do the same thing again. I have taken it to a couple of different places to have it fixed. The first PC Tech replaced the LCD cable. It didn't fix the problem. The second PC Tech said he couldn't find any thing wrong with the laptop other than some settings-which he changed. The problem is still not fixed. So if anyone out here has any idea what could possibly fix this problem-I would be very grateful. I really hate to keep spending time and money and still have the same old problem-so now the laptop just sits most of the time, and she is using one of my desktops. I have been told that the problem might be the motherboard-but if this were the case-would it work after a system restore? All of my daughter's files are backed up-so should I try to reinstall everything to the way it was originally. Can I do this with the disks that came with the laptop? Thanks

right you can only have one antivirus program on the pc at one time, you can have multiples of the malware programs that you run the scans manually with they are not running all the time so would not conflict. here are my instructions (I now just keep them in a document) McAfee removal directions these are the full directions for Mcafee removal, I used this exact procedure and it went well and have since shared it with others for their removal. be sure you use the mcafee removal tool after you have removed it from add remove programs or much will be left behind. First turn off Mcafee at the icon in the systray. I had to go into msconfig and turn off all mcafee items from startup prior to trying to uninstall, just turning them off did not work it would say the program was still running. So if you run into this when going to add remove programs try doing that. I then removed everything using add remove programs, leaving Security center till last. Then used the removal tool, after that I went to Program Files and deleted all mcafee files. Also set Windows explorer to show all hidden files and folders and deleted the mcafee folders. I found these instructions on how to do this on the mcafee forums. 1. Uninstall all mcafee programs through "Add or Remove Programs" in Windows "Control Panel". 2. Use the MCPR tool, see this article: How to remove supported mcafee consumer products using the mcafee Consumer Products removal tool (MCPR.exe). This will remove all mcafee remnants from your computer. (you must have Windows Vista, XP or 2000 SP4 to use this tool) 3. Launch Windows Explorer and delete all mcafee files in "Program Files" but especially in "C:\Document and Settings\\Application Data" and "C:\Document and Settings\All Users\Application Data". You have to set Windows Explorer to show all hidden files and folders (Tools > Folder Options > View tab). Just delete the mcafee folders even if they are empty in all the "Application Data" folders. Can be more than one! I'm hoping I did this right. First I think I should mention: After I clicked install I had a message pop up that said "HJT appears to have been started from a temp folder. Since temp. folders tend to be emptied regularly it's wise to copy HJT.exe to a folder of its own, for instance C:Program Files\HiJackThis This way, any back ups tht will be made of fixed items won't be lost. Please quite HJT & copy it to a separate folder 1st before fixing any items." I didn't know how to do this..so I just clicked ok. I then clicked System Scan & save logfile button.... then received a message that said.. "For some reason your system denied write access to the hosts file. If any hijacked domains are in this file, HJT may NOT be able to fix this. If that happens, you need to edit the file yourself. to do this, click start, run & type: notepad C:\Windows\Systems32\drivers\etc\hosts & press enter. find the line(s) hjt reports & delete them. Save the files as 'hosts' (w/ quotes), & reboot. For Vista (which is what I have) Simply, exit HJT, right click on the HJT icon, choose 'run as administrator'. Wasn't sure what that was all about either so I clicked ok and then it scanned. The scan literally only took seconds. Is this normal? I didn't do anything else.
