AOL shuts down computer

Besides having DSL problems todsy

When I signed on to AOL I would get the black screen and it would shut down my computer. I have AOL 9.0 and DS discovered that sometime today AOL downloaded 9.1.

I have avoided that since I've heard so many problems with the version. We did a system restore back to DEc 15th so at least my computer booted up and a couple of times I was able to get back on the AOL but then it started shutting down the comp again.

Outside of getting rid of AOL any suggestions? I have nevr had any problems with it until today. We thought of uninstalling the version in the computer and reinstalling the 9.0 Anything I should know about ahead of time? Thanks in advance

I'm on here by going directly to Explorer that and AOL are the only two ways of getting on the internet right now

I would suggest uninstalling AOL . Then you can reinstall from the AOL disk you have, just follow the instructions as a current member. All your setting, favorites, etc. will be there. I have had AOL9.1 for ages and have no problem. Actually I use Firefox, or IE for surfing. I can reach AOL using them, but find it easier to check my mail and use my old favorites from AOL. Since AOL is free it was just easier for me to keep it.

Are you sure that the problem is AOL? Uninstalling it and the running your PC without it for a while should tell you if it is an AOL problem.

I've been able to get on the internet using my explorer (IE)connection I don't know how to access AOL from here. Thanks for the help

Thanks owbist for the browser suggestions. chemocurl, I did open both of the blogs that you posted. I even looked around a bit on both to see if my problem happened again. (Loved both of them, too, since I love to garden.) Neither made my computer shut down. Not sure if I didn't 'visit' them long enough or not for it to happen. No, I don't have anything on blogspot myself. We haven't noticed the 'shut downs' happening with anything else. Do you have any suggestions as to what may be causing this? Thanks for your help!

I have some of my towers under the desk on small pedestals and some on top of the desk, I have a ceiling fan in the room that usually is on except in the dead of winter and under the desk I have a small fan that runs circulating air around those towers at all times, it can get warm under that desk and the fan does help keep air moving. My husband uses his laptop all day long at work, he puts it in the docking station when he gets there in the morning and it stays there and on and running till he comes home at night unless he has a meeting to take it to, but it gets good air flow being on the desk and in the docking station. I think if a laptop caught fire like that it had a serious over heating problem, if it did not have it's vents blocked. I know a lot of bad batteries in laptops have caused fires. they do make laptop bases that have additional fans built in them to help keep them cool.

yes it will have a pop up down by the clock, be sure you do not have yours in the hidden icons thing if you do you can move it down onto the bar so you can see it better. Just make sure when you make your choice you pick the one that says notify me do not install or something like that.

Basically he has built you a new computer and I think that is great that he can do that. Does he know about the problem and is unsure of a fix or would you prefer to find the answer without his knowledge and not embarrass him? Either way from the little we have I suspect that perhaps the power supply is not big enough or the cooling fan over the heatsink on the CPU is not up to the job. Was this originally a factory built computer? If so provide the make and model please so we can see what parts are left from the original computer. If you are comfortable it would help if you removed the left side panel (likely held on by 2 screws needing a screwdriver) we need the make and model of the power supply and the output watts listed, that is the big metal box at the top rear of the cabinet with all the wires sticking out of it. While the side is off do you have a small fan that you could place on the desk blowing inwards while the computer runs? This will be temporary to see if this is heat related, if it is cutting out frequently it should not take too long to check the heat issue if it is there. Any chance you know the make and model of the new motherboard? It will be stamped on the board if you do take the side off.

You just type in aol.com in the ie address bar, it'll take you to aol where you can sign in to your email account.

you might want to go ahead and get firefox browser also so you have an alternative to IE and AOL to access the web. It is much better also.
Aol is the root of much pc distress.

it is a different browser and much safer than Ie and AOL just another access to use to get to websites. I have been using it for many many years and much prefer it to anything else.
Even Homeland Security has on several occasions suggested using firefox rather than Ie.

are you using Vista or Xp?
I was just today reading about some instances of black screen on vista.

I'm using XP and right now I'm on my regular AOL with no seeming problems
