Computer shuts down and reboot on its own!!!

This has happened about three different times. I'll be on and go to paste or post something in a site and suddenly the screen goes black and my computer shuts off and starts to reboot itself. Any fixes for this? I have AOL 9.0 Se, a Compaq, Windows XP.

DS is in town and recently we did every kind of clener imaginable as well as defrag and virus scans Help would be appreciated

shut downs happen for various reasons but one is when it gets over heated, it is often a sign that something is going bad, could be a fan has stopped running or the power supply is going, or the inside of the pc is full of dust bunnies clogging everything up. When was the last time you took the side panel off and cleaned out the dust? That is a must do chore, get some canned air and carefully blow out the dust, make sure you have the power off of course and ground yourself by holding on to the metal frame of your pc case or get a little cheap antistatic bracelet at any electronics store for a couple bucks.

Malware can make it do that too, I do not know what you mean when you say you ran every kind of cleaner imaginable, do you mean antispyware programs? or do you mean registry cleaners, if it was registry cleaners that could be a problem. Listing what you did recently might help.
I suggest getting superantispyware free and updating it, running it and let it clean what it finds.

Start>Control Panel>System>Advanced>'Startup & Recovery'>settings>'System failure'>untick Automatically Restart. This will give you an error message when it happens again. Post the FULL ERROR MESSAGE.

I would suggest uninstalling AOL . Then you can reinstall from the AOL disk you have, just follow the instructions as a current member. All your setting, favorites, etc. will be there. I have had AOL9.1 for ages and have no problem. Actually I use Firefox, or IE for surfing. I can reach AOL using them, but find it easier to check my mail and use my old favorites from AOL. Since AOL is free it was just easier for me to keep it. Are you sure that the problem is AOL? Uninstalling it and the running your PC without it for a while should tell you if it is an AOL problem.

Please do the steps below that will enable you to read the EXACT blue screen error next time the pc blue screens, post the error here, a blue screen error can be related to many things this will only be the start of finding the exact cause. 1.Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. 2.Click the Advanced tab. 3.Under Startup and Recovery, click Settings to open the Startup and Recovery dialog box. 4.Clear the Automatically restart check box, and click OK the necessary number of times. 5.Restart your computer for the settings to take effect. Now when you go to shut down and a fatal error occurs, you'll at least see it and it won't cause an automatic reboot. then we can sort out what's causing the problem.

Perhaps the heatsink fan has quit, then computer will indeed shut down to protect the processor (CPU) If a desktop remove the side panel to see if the fan is spinning up, if a laptop feel the outlet for the air it will be on the side, back or bottom. Or if the computer stays running long enough download Speccy from Filehippo and run it to see your temps. Stay with the free version. Does the computer run for seconds, minutes or longer before shutting down?

yes it will have a pop up down by the clock, be sure you do not have yours in the hidden icons thing if you do you can move it down onto the bar so you can see it better. Just make sure when you make your choice you pick the one that says notify me do not install or something like that.

You speak of cleaners. Did you do an AV scan?

It is an old virus but there was one out a few years back that caused undesired rebooting. You just never know particularly if you happened to have click on an old link presented by Google.
