Oh I know. It's a sad loss, but what a great legacy he left. In The Night Kitchen is my favorite Sendak book.

You can see many of his original illustrations at The Rosenbach Museum and Library in center city Philadelphia. What a treasure.

I know what you mean yoyo. I usually pass on paperbacks and have one friend who shares my 'taste' in books so no difficulties there. I made the mistake recently of handing on a light, but well-written book to my s-in-l thinking it might amuse here. Vee "Maybe you'd like to read this ? I don't want it back so pass it on when you have finished with it." H "A book? For me? To read?" Looks suspicious. Vee " Well, I found it quite entertaining. I just thought you might enjoy it." H Taking book as though it is a consignment of drugs and she should have on her rubber gloves. "I don't know, err but um . . ." Vee, feeling very stupid as though she should have remembered H belongs to a sect that forbids the written-word or maybe never learnt to read " It doesn't matter, it was just an idea." H "Well OK . . . thanks. I don't normally read books." Vee, in amazement "Never read a book?" H. "No, although I did read one a few years ago which was quite good." Vee realising she has almost lost the plot "Oh, what was it called?" H. " I've no idea."

I’ve seen a number of SF authors at SF conventions over the years. Some were very approachable, happy to talk and socialise with fans and others essentially locked themselves in their hotel room when not required to be on a panel or whatever. (I got driving lessons from Harry Harrison when as a new driver delegated to chauffeuring him and his lovely wife Joan (who gave me a new blouse she thought suited me better than it did her :-) ), I couldn’t do a hill start in a manual shift at the traffic lights without stalling. Joan helped by yelling at the other, honking drivers :-D And after I dropped them off and parked before going up to their hotel room, Harry handed me a neat Scotch as I walked in the door :-D) The late, great Terry Pratchett was another fantastic, personable guest, as was the also late, great Anne McCaffrey. I went to a literary lunch with Michael Connelly as guest of honour, and he spoke well and was also happy to answer questions (yes, I had one :-) ).

I also sighed a sad sigh and thought "Happy once, happy twice, happy chicken soup with rice." It was one of Ashley's favorites.

I still have the tiny books with "Chicken Soup with Rice", "Alligators All Around", "Pierre, A Cautionary Tale" and "One was Johnny" which I was given when I was five or six. I used to read them to a child I babysat so often I had them all memorised and could just rattle them off while turning the pages and reading my own book at the same time :-) DD also loved them. I still quote them from time to time when something reminds me of them...

My son's favorite book ever was Where the Wild Things Are. I had it memorized. He was disappointed that the movie didn't represent the book in the way he thought. Hated the movie. Thank you Mr. Sendak for great memories!

All my favorites too! Where the Wild Things Are the most! I never realized that the monsters were somewhat parodies of his family! At least that's what he told Teri Gross in one interview I heard! He does resemble that one monster! I always loved Max's journey there and most importantly--back home! But I also had the small boxed set of his other tomes like Chicken Soup with Rice and Alligators all Around, and I Don't Care Pierre! Never got into the Night Kitchen, I was too old by that time.
