You will never get rid of it sadly. Do you have a throw away email address? Like Hotmail, Yahoo or the like? If not you should so that when you visit places like this and are required to register you use that throw away address. Then if the Spam gets out of hand you simply abandon that address and create a new one.

Your email address with your ISP should be reserved for only family and close friends - no one else.

If you use Outlook Express do you have the 'Preview' pane showing? If so stop doing that as any message is then actually opened and if it contains anything undesirable you given it access to your computer.

Do you open these Spam messages? Do not open them, just delete. If you are unsure of the sender then you can do this.
Right click on the message header
Click Properties
Click Details at the top
Click Message source
Expand to full screen and read away amongst the gibberish.

This takes you in the back door without actually opening an email.

I very little spam using a Yahoo address for almost everything.

There is some obscure way to set up you Yahoo so that you can save all the things they have diverted to spam and even retrieve them if you want to. Go to Yahoo, start an account and then look under options on the email page and somewhere there is a place that you select of save spam, if you want to see what they are tossing out before you defer to them completely.

the most important thing is when you have a spam email on your pc do not open it but do not simply hit delete instead send it to your junk or spam mail bin you must do this for your filters to learn what they should set as junk they are learning filters so the more often you do that the quicker it learns what you deem junk and then it will direct them accordingly.

All email clients have
the ability to set up filters look in your settings area to see what filters are available. you can actually set it up so that you only get email from people in your address book if you desire.

And definitely set up a separate account just for online activities.

Plus if you have "friends" that are sending you forwarded emails that show long lists of people's email addresses that person is NOT your friend if they were they would be using the blind carbon copy feature so that NO addresses show up, this is the number one way that people's addresses get sold to spammers from those long lists of forwarded emails. If someone is doing that please send them a nice email educating them to how to use BCC and if they refuse ask them to take you off their mailing list.

It is very simple to simply copy the email into a new email window and paste it and use BCC for the addresses do not continue the forwarded email with other addresses showing. Or highlight and delete any showing email addresses when forwarding.

Be very careful what you sign up for!

check your email settings to make sure you do have your spam filters turned on.

I like all the suggestions previously shared.

I would like to add the idea of having multiple on-line e-mail accounts along with a primary ISP account. In my case, the ISP account is for close friends and family, along with my investment activities. I have a Hotmail account for forums and computer related site registrations, a Hotmail account for on-line shopping, prescriptions, etc. Finally, I have a throw away Yahoo account for all others.

The majority of SPAM received is of our creation as lax users. You might have to contact your ISP and create a new account with them. Then you could start over with the excellent new disciplines you have learned here.
