HELP with bathroom layout and ideas...

Here's our bathroom plan...

To the right of the master bedroom is the livingroom, and to the right of the master bath/shower/walk in closet is the den/office.

The dimensions are hard to read since I used a (not very good) app on my phone to take the pic. The interior dimensions of the bathroom are: the custom walk in shower (tiled) is 5 feet wide X 8 feet long. The dimensions of the rest of the bathroom area with the vanity and toilet is 8 feet wide X 10ft 4inches long.

The shower is huge, but it is the space we had to fit it in. The vanity as shown is about 7 feet or so long.

Any ideas for a different layout? We do not want a tub, we will have a hot tub out the back of our master bedroom (there will be a door not a window back there). And what should we do with such a large space for the vanity? Thats alot of counterspace...and I'm just not sure it is necessary.

We are going to build on a slab, no basement, no steps coming into the house, and no steps on the main floor. Also we are doing wide doors so the house will be essentially handicap accessible (we plan to retire in this home and you never know!). So the door going into the shower will be about 36 inches wide also.

Any help I can get on this over the weekend will be deeply appreciated!! I need to meet with my builder on Monday and I've been so tied up with the kitchen, I haven't had time to even consider looking at the bathroom!

I find a bath that is used by two people to be much more functional when the toilet is in separate room. I don't want to put on my makeup while my husband is doing his business on the toilet. YMMV

Ha ha, don't like my boulder in the shower? Yes, I agree the bench is more practical Good idea about niches, it keeps everything neat. I am not a big fan of towers, as the space can use some interest in the design. You have enough space for a linen cabinet and it can be smaller in width. Visually it will look better with the vanity top from one wall to the other, even if the cabinet is in front. If you feel a tower is right, consider having on the left side of the vanity as you walk in. If you hang the vanity off the floor (not have the cabinet to the floor) the bathroom will look larger. I like modern also with a touch of classic elements. There are so many options for bathroom design. We have a pocket door on the 3/4 bath inside the master, and honestly we almost never close it. We close the bedroom swing door if we need privacy. The pocket door is there if we need it. But for a full bath going out into a hallway a swing door would be much better.

Overwhelmed by all the responses here -- thank you SO much everyone! This community is incredible. Trying to get back to every single message: Mark Bischak, Architect - A mockup is a brilliant idea. I'll put down some painters tape and get a better feel for the space. I really think AR/VR would be so powerful for floorplan visualization. I did think about accessing via closet, nice to have that separation from the bedroom for when only one of us is getting ready. But the boss nixed that one. Gas chamber I am still 50/50 on. Karenseb - I just measured, and a 36" width shower is plenty large. I like the idea of a two-person shower, but just big enough to where we are comfortable but don't sacrifice the ability to get nice steam build-up. Your second message with the floorplan is very interesting. Two closets and a more usefully dimensioned bathroom would be fantastic. I will run this by my architect. Thank you!!! Susan Davis - Lots of fun to be had!! Good point about the door that pushes in, I think that is ideal as well. North Texan - Thanks for the description, I will try to re-create based on your vision and post an update. Love, love the skylight. Of course moisture and energy efficiency loss, but natural light is a must. Virgil Carter Fine Art - That is a huge concern. What is a comfortable amount of aisle space for two to be in the bathroom? I think mocking up with tape will be very helpful here. Mrs Pete - I am searching for the floorplan that makes a 'WOW!' when you walk in. Yes, I agree, single hinge opening towards the wall would be ideal. We want to do shelves and a pull-out hamper in the 18"-24" ceiling height cabinet. Without the toilet room and making any major modifications to the master suite, this is my favorite floorplan as well. Karenseb's design is very interesting to me as well. shead - Thanks for the input on the shower. I agree; it's too large and will be both a pain to clean and will not be as steamy as we'd like. Not to mention, if it spans the entire wall, we only have one side of glass. A second side of glass will make it feel more open.

I agree with Cpartist"s layout and like moving the closet over as suggested by D M so that bedroom 3 has easier access to the bathroom. Do you have room to have the toilet face the tub and add a linen cabinet next to the toilet? How wide is the tub toilet area?

I agree with terriks. We can't fit a separate toilet room into our remodel but at least I've got a 1/2 wall for a 'bit' of privacy. It's better than nothing! If space permits go for a toilet 'room'

I don't think a 7' vanity is too long for 2 sinks, but that's just me. (Ours is at least 9' long and I love the long expanse of counter and all the drawers below.) But since you have the room, a pony wall (or full wall) between the vanity and toilet would be great. I love the one that mongoct built in the link below. A pony wall with storage -- functional and attractive.

weedyacres...thats a window (casement) next to the toilet. Across/in front of the toilet is the walk in opening to the shower.

chicagoans...wow, I love the idea of making a wider pony wall/cabinet like that!

I'm considering doing glass blocks on the left shower wall...good/bad idea? Would let in alot of light.

I too vote for hiding the toilet, preferably in a separate room. And unless the shower will have two heads, I'd shrink it in favor of more closet space. And I'd prefer a glass wall to glass blocks on the shower.

But those are just my opinions. Others have differing privacy priorities or wardrobe sizes. :-)

I think a pony wall would be neat, but I don't think I would do a toilet in a separate room since you are trying to make this handicap accessible.

I did my parent's plans to allow enough room for a separate toilet room, but in the end they nixed the idea after having to help my mother's parents who used a wheelchair temporarily after a surgery.

I do like the idea of extra storage in the pony wall.

Just joining in here - but what if you put the shower on the opposite side of the room? Walk in and see your beautiful shower on that back wall instead of the toilet. Instead, have your toilet on the right (from this angle in the image) I guess it would be the left in the room. Could have a door or just be tucked into a little nook.
