ubuntu trying to update the drivers for cd rom

Hi again!
I'm having quite a time trying to make a bootable cd. Come to find out my cd drive will not write. I downloaded a zip file to update the drive but now I can't seem to install it where it needs to go. In terminal I type 'sudo apt-get install cdrom.inf' which is what the file is named.
It responds 'E: Unable to locate package cdrom.inf
E: Couldn't find any package by regex 'cdrom.inf'
Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

I don't have an answer but would like to ask a couple questions.

(1) You say the cd drive will not write. Will it read?

(2) If it neither reads nor writes, is the kernel detecting the drive?

Use the dmesg command on this page. (Sorry, this forum won't let me post a vertical bar)

(3) If it reads but doesn't write, Is it even capable of writing?

cat /proc/sys/dev/cdrom/info

Note: When interpreting the results, "1" means "yes", "0" means "no".

(4) In any event, you seem to be trying to install a Windows driver (.inf) on a Linux system. Was Linux unable to provide a suitable driver? If not, what are you using that allows Linux to make use the Windows driver? "ndiswrapper" perhaps? If so (and only if so) you might want to try:

sudo ndiswrapper -i cdrom.inf

Sorry, if it's not something simple, I probably can't help.

Yes it reads. I installed this version of ubuntu on it,and I can view a photo disc.
Disk utility shows it but has a dash beside write cache. K3B shows it,but says error beside write.

I honestly don't know what I'm using that allows me to use the driver. Maybe I can't? How would I get a linux driver? I am up to date on all kernel updates as far as I know.
I thought maybe I just needed to add something else like a destination for the file?
If I can't get it figured out I will try ubuntu forums. Thanks for your help chuggerguy!

Is there a reason you want to get rid of XP? If no, why not dual-boot? Don't expect your wireless to work in the Live CD. If you know what kind of wireless card you have, It'd be a good idea to do some research to find out if it's supported. Also if a wired connection is available while installing Ubuntu that is highly recommended. I have two installs of 10.04 running on two Dell desktops. After installing, go to System > Administration > Hardware Drivers to see if any additional drivers for your video or wireless are available. I discovered after both installs that the audio was muted, so I had to locate the audio control and increase it. I've had no issues with dvd drive or display. Any printer I connected was recognized automatically.

Owbist, thanks for the suggestion of a new thread. The computer I am having problems with only has X-P. Due to a problem with my X-P machine, I have put the Ubuntu project on the back burner. Please allow me to tell you about my new problem. X-P SP3, 1024 MB memory. Due to a connection related problem I talked to the folks at ATT. They got me back on line but the computer is very slow, it has not crashed, but it takes forever for the pages to load. Sometimes I type faster than the computer can load the images of the type, and I am a very slow typer. When going from one web page to another is seems like forever. When I try to click back to the former page, also takes a long time. Also, the pages load small and I have to enlarge them, nothing seems to work like it should. I have run Malwarebytes, Ccleaner, Spyware Blaster and defragged the computer...nothing bad showed up. Steve

Personally I wish everyone would either use a linux live cd or add Linux to their pc in a separate partition or use the wubi installer to put it into windows itself. At any rate it should be what everyone uses to do their day to day activities online, like surfing, going to forums, checking your web mail, anything like that should be done using linux and there would be much less infections happening. It is so easy to do and so easy to use for those simple chores there really is no reason not to do it. I never surf using windows anymore just too many websites that have been infected and are spreading nasty bugs. Surfing with linux no worries they can't affect you. There is on a daily basis normally nothing I have to switch over to my windows pc for. But should I need it for some of the programs that I use on windows then I do just that switch to that pc do my work there then go back to linux to hit the internet. Using linux to do that kind of simple stuff is a breeze. Plus if you already use firefox you wont' notice you are on linux since you will be using firefox there also. And you can save your bookmarks file from your windows firefox and import it to the linux firefox and have all your faves right there there. Running on live cd will be slower of course than installing it but it is great for starting out so you can see how to use it and not mess anything up. I put up that link to how to order the free cd just for that reason I wish everyone here would go ahead and order at least one to have on hand should your windows ever die on you at least with the live cd handy you can get in and save your files off. I am by no means a linux pro but I sure do know some so anytime anyone needs help please just ask and if I don't know the answer I will find someone who can help! They are very helpful people, and forums available. There is a somewhat new way to use linux on your windows pc using the wubi installer, this is included on the ubuntu and kubuntu live cd. With wubi you choose to install linux to your windows just as if it were any other type of program. Say like you are installing AVG it puts it in it's own folder then if you ever want to get rid of it you go to add remove programs and select it and hit remove. That is what wubi does, it installs linux in windows as a program in it's own folder and does not interfere with anything else on your windows system, if you decide you no longer want it go to add remove programs find it in the list and hit remove. You can select how large you want to let the linux folder be when you install it. here are a couple screenshots to show how simple it is. I agree but for a different reason. Unless you were a heavy user of the optical drive in the old machine, it's probably fine. They don't tend to be subject to much wear and tear. A BIGGER issue is a possible interoperability problem between the old drive and the new PC. Manufacturers don't always write new drivers for old hardware models when a new Windows version comes out. Also, the old drive may have an older interface (like IDE) that your newer PC may not have the capability for.

Hi kaijutokusatsu.

Yeah, that's what I'm seeing. It's a "CD-ROM" drive and is only capable of reading.
A quick search took me here, which seems to verify?

Yeah...I feel stupid. Oh well. Back to the drawing board. I don't suppose there is any way to use a portable dvd player as a dvd drive for a computer.

You can buy a cheap external portable DVD player like this guy recommends...

I don't have a portable dvd player but if it's what I picture it to be, no, it will only play, not burn.

I bet you could order a good burner for less than $20 if you don't need it right now.

If you do need it right now, I don't know. Burn it on another computer? Borrow a burner out of an old computer? Local shop/retailer?

Thanks. I only mentioned a dvd player because I have a perfectly brand new linux mint 14 dvd, which I bought, not realising my two old pcs only boot with cds. I really need to start paying more attention.
As for the usb, yes I have an iso ready to go on one but my pc will not boot with it. LOL! Anyway short of winning the lottery these old clunkers are what I have to work with for now. I'll figure something out!

The bumbling around you're describing doesn't make it sound like you're an ideal candidate for using linux.

I'm not sure how many PCs you need to use, but if you're trying to make a go of it with old ones, you might do better if you stick to Windows.
