installing ubuntu linux

I installed unbuntu linux inside win xp to check it out.

Its slow but I knew to expect that running under those conditions.

If I reformat the HD and install linux as the only OS will I have a problem with drivers for dvd drive, internet connection, sound, display, etc.

This is on an old azus a3000 notebook.

Any glitches I should be aware of ahead of time.

You could burn a self contained Ubuntu ISO to a CD and run from there without actually installing to see what you have and might not have. Then if you are satisfied you could wipe the hard drive and install Linux permanently.

agree use a live linux cd if it runs well that way it should run well installed. Not a sure thing but usually is pretty indicative. The things you mention can certainly be problems however the ubuntu forums are wonderful at helping.

Yes it reads. I installed this version of ubuntu on it,and I can view a photo disc. Disk utility shows it but has a dash beside write cache. K3B shows it,but says error beside write. cat/proc/sys/dev/cdrom/info: drive name: sr0 drive speed: 52 drive # of slots: 1 Can close tray: 1 Can open tray: 1 Can lock tray: 1 Can change speed: 1 Can select disk: 0 Can read multisession: 1 Can read MCN: 1 Reports media changed: 1 Can play audio: 1 Can write CD-R: 0 Can write CD-RW: 0 Can read DVD: 0 Can write DVD-R: 0 Can write DVD-RAM: 0 Can read MRW: 1 Can write MRW: 1 Can write RAM: 1 no ndiswrapper I honestly don't know what I'm using that allows me to use the driver. Maybe I can't? How would I get a linux driver? I am up to date on all kernel updates as far as I know. I thought maybe I just needed to add something else like a destination for the file? Owbist, thanks for the suggestion of a new thread. The computer I am having problems with only has X-P. Due to a problem with my X-P machine, I have put the Ubuntu project on the back burner. Please allow me to tell you about my new problem. X-P SP3, 1024 MB memory. Due to a connection related problem I talked to the folks at ATT. They got me back on line but the computer is very slow, it has not crashed, but it takes forever for the pages to load. Sometimes I type faster than the computer can load the images of the type, and I am a very slow typer. When going from one web page to another is seems like forever. When I try to click back to the former page, also takes a long time. Also, the pages load small and I have to enlarge them, nothing seems to work like it should. I have run Malwarebytes, Ccleaner, Spyware Blaster and defragged the computer...nothing bad showed up. Steve

I just got a new hard drive installed in my main box to load the new Mepis8 distro on, I have been running Mepis Linux for years now and love it, one of the great things about Mepis is how well it will run things right out of the box. I have a dual boot box with an older ubuntu+kde and Mepis7 also along with boxes running xp pro, xp home, and windows 7. I think learning to use Mepis was easier than learning the new windows 7. I do not think there is an age limit or knowledge limit for using linux I know many seniors that have gone to linux so they do not have to worry about all those infection problems and looking for programs to protect them. In linux you can get darn near anything you need right in the package manager, if it did not come pre loaded on the live cd. the new linux distros are made for GUI use, use of command line is not as essential as it was. Some people want to learn command line and go on and on about using it, I have found that when I have a problem I can generally find a way to fix it with out command line. Plus the linux community forums are fabulous and helpful. I prefer using it because it is faster, has everything I need built right in, and it is safer. Is it right for everyone maybe not but same goes for new versions of windows or switching to Mac it all takes a new learning curve. I however do not preach linux, I think it is a personal choice but picking up a free live cd of a distro and putting into the cd drawer and running it on a pc is an excellent and safe way to see what linux is all about without touching their windows and with no install, just like playing a cd, and everyone should have a live cd in their possession for when they have a crash and need to access their info from the drive. We have many linux users here at GW, some decided to give it a try after seeing it mentioned here. I enjoy occasional conversations with others that made the jump.

Is there a reason you want to get rid of XP? If no, why not dual-boot? Don't expect your wireless to work in the Live CD. If you know what kind of wireless card you have, It'd be a good idea to do some research to find out if it's supported. Also if a wired connection is available while installing Ubuntu that is highly recommended.

I have two installs of 10.04 running on two Dell desktops. After installing, go to System > Administration > Hardware Drivers to see if any additional drivers for your video or wireless are available. I discovered after both installs that the audio was muted, so I had to locate the audio control and increase it. I've had no issues with dvd drive or display. Any printer I connected was recognized automatically.

Why not do as I have done .. install ubuntu with Wubi?
The download will install ubuntu on your pc, into a folder like you would do with any other software download.

Nothing on your system is changed .. Nothing.

When you boot up, your pc will ask what system you wish to use and you can either choose ubuntu or don't choose either and the pc will boot normally into your default xp/vista or windows 7 system.

It has been a Great learning experience and I haven't changed anything! 8)

I did install it with wubi and it was just too slow to be worth while. I also have a problem with the different language it uses for everything. I guess I am just set in my ways.
I might try dual boot to see if that is acceptable speed wise.
