Messenger & MSN browser have check marks .. so they are installed. You sort of did things backwards. Just browse and expand that list and put a check mark next to your Games & they'll come back. As you notice more things that don't work.. browse that again and add checkmarks. Usually nothing in there is required - all sort of optional stuff that is enabled when it does have a check mark to the item wanted. So uncheck your messenger and MSN browser & they'll go away & use a few less memory and cpu resources and save a few drive bytes.

if you took your pc into a repair shop and they returned it with the xp repair infection still on it you need to get your money back and never take anything back there again. You have a serious rogue infection on your pc. Anyone that knows anything would have informed you of that and gone through the cleaning process. You need to go to the forum I am going to link to and register there, start a new thread of your own there in the area I link to. Tell them what you have told here and you can put a link to this thread too. You will be assisted by the team there to go through the clean up procedure to be rid of this infection. It is not one you can do with out assistance. Once you begin there please just stick with the team there and only follow those directions so there is no confusion or conflict. I am there also if you need help getting started. Analysis and Malware Removal do not do anything else to your pc and lets hope they did not clear out any of your temp file folders. do not attempt to follow the directions from bleeping computer alone get the help at LzD to guide you.

I'm now leaning more towards doing the transfers through external hard drive (gulp) - however, I'm confused on how to hook up the new computer with the old computer still hooked up. Would I just plug it in, and then connect it to our wireless home network? It seems the (old) monitor has only one hook-up spot which the old computer is plugged into. Should I wait for the new monitor to arrive (which is supposed to be about a month from now according to the estimated delivery date)? Or do I need the new computer hooked into a monitor just for transferring data? Now I'm thinking maybe I just need the new computer plugged into the monitor, and the XP computer not plugged in - lol - I'm confused. Maybe I should wait until everything arrives.

jerry- One of the biggest problems I see is people who are continually looking for the best software -- free and paid --that will clean/tweak/fix their computers. Why is this a problem? Because when you fix things that aren't broken, you sometimes make things worse. That's not to say that there aren't some good pieces of freeware out there to deal with specific problems, and I, myself, use free anti-virus and anti-malware. But in 25 years of using and working on computers, I have learned the hard way that doing basic, occasional maintenance using standard tools, like the defrag utility already on your computer, emptying the recycle bin, setting my browser to clear cookies and history each time I shut it down, running regular scans, etc., is typically is enough to keep my computers working just fine. I have worked on the machines of quite a few friends who have overused certain programs and caused problems where none needed to exist. I agree with everyone above who questions the paid-for software one sees on tv, which has messed up many computers.
