system idle process????

For some time now I've noticed that my computer seems to run amock. It'll sound like it's trying to solve equations for NASA, for hours at a time, then it'll quiet down for a few hours and start up all over again.

Most of the time when it's noisy my CPU runs between 50 and 100, staying at 97 to 100 for long periods.

When I check my task manager, I usually have 55 to 60 listings, but the only one that ever seems to be actively doing anything while the computer is going wild is the system idle process, whereas other things are listed at 00 or 03, etc., it's usually humming at 97 or 99. What the heck is it doing??

I've noticed a marked slowdown when opening some pages online when this is going on.

By the way, we use a cable internet provider, and have a router for my son's laptop, and I notice my cable modem flickers constantly even if my computer is turned off.

I use AVG free and run spybot, and ad-aware and I just ran the crap cleaner program. Task manager says I'm running at around 50 as of this moment.

I'm of the older generation, and what I know of computers I've been picking up along the way these past few years, so please keep that in mind. Sometimes when I hunt for computer info I understand what they're talking about and other times it goes right over my head.
