CPU Running at 100%

I did a restore to a date two days back before I install a USB connected Maxtor 60GB One Touch III back up. I came with an enclosure and I assume it contains a 2.5" notebook hard drive.

Strange that could cause the cpu overload, but that seems to be the case. I may try to reinstall, but will run for a while to be sure the problem doesn't creep back in.

The cpu is now running most of the time below 10% with some short term (a few seconds) spikes over 30%

That drive comes with automated backup scheduling and perhaps this is the process that is for some reason using the large amount of cpu usage, that process could be viewed in the task manger where you view the cpu usage and you could try turing that off if you are happy w/o auto back up through MSconfig--just need to find out the name of it

well you can use the cpu fan by cutting off the molex connector and wiring it straight to the ac-dc converter I suppose. If it is a cpu fan, it runs on 12 volts so just get an adaptor that can supply that. Amperage shouldn't matter, as that fan will use very little power. A simpler solution might be an AC fan from radioshack. Thats what I use. It's a 120mm (~4 inch) fan that runs on 120VAC, which is what your wall supplies. Just wire a plug to the end of it and you are ready to go. Your link doesn't work btw. Good luck KayWhy -DH

Thanks everyone for your input. Now let me take you back a bit: I was at my brother's and he has a system that seems identical to mine: WMe, P3 or P4, old computers. I have a P3, and mine works MUCH faster. We went through the usual slow computer remedies, got it running faster, but still not near what mine does, even though mine (at that time) ran on only 128MB of ram and he had 256. It hadn't occured to me to see if both fans were working. Of course there must be a lot of variables between our two computers, but I got to more thinking, and so spawned this thread. I asked him to see if the CPU fan was working, and found it was at a dead stop. He said it needed the tiniest of a push to get it going and now his computer zings along like it always had.

Thanks, my most troublesome PC (laptop) is my newest and W8, that may be part of the problem. While I am more an electronic type than an plumber, your pipe description is great and I hope others read it - I found it helpful, if accurate on the part about content providers. . As for "it depends" on local, I can say I ran tests offered from the web end-to-end and while the tests were not runs simultaneous (DSL verses Cable) they were in the same week. My DSL is spec'ed at 8 Mb max, and is consistently over 6 Mb and consistently delivers the same, maybe faster on initial delivery of my browser home page which is DSL ISP provided. Your statement about the content provider controlling via a garden hose size connection determines how much data is being sent my way, is sufficient, in their minds. To my mind it isn't as I see sprits of unsynchronized autio/video and even delay/breaks occassionally Worse, when I want to advance (even with Netfilx) to a later point in the program it take way to long to advance and seems to be totally independent of the access speed. As for my slow too old W8 PC I can say when new about a year ago, I did not have any browser (Firefox) delay complaints. One of the helpful contributors here took me to "help2go" to analyze test dumps on my subject W8 machine, and while a number of hand selected deletions were made, the problem continues. The problem, as is not the case right now as I type, I have "Flash" on request only - it is not now on and there are no troubling delays in the display of the typed words,. I think Flash Off may also spare me a lot of marketing crap being shoved my way... I have noticed low volume which is another complaint I have on laptops in general and the newest W8 in particular, is the on-board speakers are first Crap and second do no produce sufficient volume to be useful, even in a quiet room and when wearing hearing aids. Yes, one of the benefits of old age, failing hearing... and I suppose thinking.

Yes, you're are right about the automatic backup. If that was it, it didn't show as a "running application", in fact after seeing nothing was running, I looked to see how resources were being used, I had just experienced two failures to send email to my ISP.

I have not yet reinstalled the Maxtor back-up, and the cpu is running at low percentages, I did watch the graph for some time, out of the corner of my eye in a background process sort of way.

It may show as a SERVICE running in MSconfig if it has autoback up something has to be running unless you told it not to during install if you were given the opportunity and it may not have given you a choice, always choose CUSTOM install on any software so you can make selections as to how it is installed.

Just so we are on the same page the last entry in the task manager is System Idle Process & that should be at 98-to 100.

Infoworld had a page on Seagate/Maxtor . Seems they shipped some retail 'personal storage' drives recently with a virus. Some china sub-contractor got the blame.

Might run a virus program on that drive, maybe a thorough check on your whole computer if you havent lately.
