Someone told me once that if an Intel CPU begins to overheat, it slows its processing to "compensate" so it will never overheat, yet keep on working at a slower pace. And that this is not so with other CPUs.
The Table on CPU temps at "Tech NIbble" singles out P4 CPUs for slowing down when overheating and therefore no accurate upper limit temp can be posted...which is good news for me, because I have a P4...I think its good news.
I'm assuming (which I have made a fool out of myself many times by doing so) that the CPUs listed with an upper limit temps don't slow down (enough to measurably make a difference) to cool off, hence the upper limit temp.
When it reaches that upper temperature limit... does it die. Or just crash to a reboot.
I think if you were to look for thermal management on intels site for P4 it will reduce current when it see's overheating. Meaning it slows down. But - that will depend on the bios and chipset. If not built into the bios and chipset it will crash. Crashing frequently from heat and it will eventually cook the processor.((as every, push it to the max overclocker has experienced))

I was at my brother's and he has a system that seems identical to mine: WMe, P3 or P4, old computers. I have a P3, and mine works MUCH faster. We went through the usual slow computer remedies, got it running faster, but still not near what mine does, even though mine (at that time) ran on only 128MB of ram and he had 256. It hadn't occured to me to see if both fans were working. Of course there must be a lot of variables between our two computers, but I got to more thinking, and so spawned this thread.
I asked him to see if the CPU fan was working, and found it was at a dead stop. He said it needed the tiniest of a push to get it going and now his computer zings along like it always had.
From the link above, I downloaded and installed the recommended Everest. This is much better than Toshiba's Notebook Maximizer which is turn better than Windows System Info. It has information about your computer that you have some where around the Device Manager and System Info from Windows...but is it ever Everest nifty thrifty just to see everything you need to know in detail (to me anyway)...in plain, readable, everyday English...Amazing!
I know alot now, even the the max temp for my hardrive...and its easy to read! Yeah!
