Computer seems to be overheating...solutions?

I just got my laptop this past August, it is a HP Pavilion dv9910us. My mother got one as well.

Mine has recently started running a little louder than normal and it gets pretty hot on the bottom....solutions? What could be the problem?

Do not use it on your lap without something hard to set it on or you will block the fans/exhaust and the laptop will overheat. If you are sitting in a recliner, use a tv tray to put it on or a kitchen cutting board

it even seems to do it when sitting on something hard. it was on a wooden table earlier and my mom noticed the fan was loud.

From my limited reading, it seems to be a form of digital rights management. The unfortunate reality is that software piracy costs software companies millions (if not billions) in lost revenue and Securom is one way they are attempting to protect their intellectual property. I don't know what you can do about any failing of the DRM software other than not to buy the game. Perhaps create a virtual machine and run the game in that?

The e-mail may or may not have a virus. It could be a false positive. Regarding AVG, do you have the automatic update disabled? Do you have the Link Scanner disabled? If yes to either or both it would produce the You May Not Be Protected report you cite. Are you on dial-up(DUN?) If yes and the automatic update is enabled, and AVG attempts to do a scheduled update when there is no DUN connection it will report a failure. Do complete the suggested online scans and attempt to update AVG. If it is updated then conduct a complete on-board scan. Just as an aside, I recently did a home service for a computer that was going off and on by itself. My service found nothing wrong with the computer. It was found to be a reoccurring failure (grounding) of one phase of the 220v coming into the house. Half of the breaker box would go out periodically and unannounced. The cause was a degraded main breaker directly after the meter and before the box. DA

Hi damccoy, Thanks so very much for responding! I was trying to download from: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/download/?installer=Flash_Player_10.1_for_Windows_Internet_Explorer&p=Google_Toolbar_6.5&d=McAfee_Security_Scan_Plus&os=XP&browser=ie&type=activex I made sure it was a download for Windows XP. Made sure I had enough room to download it. I am using IE8. I only use my AOL for email because I've had it set up since 1997 and I am too lazy to go around changing my email addy with all that have it for social and business. So I wanted the flash player to load for IE8 as that's the browser I use for all my searches/internet activity. I did just recently add service pack 3 to my computer and the first time I tried to download it I had problems. That's the first time my friend told me about this site here at GW. I ended up being able to get the service pack 3 on my second try. I tried a second time with Adobe Flash 10 and then again a third time but even though I get the message box that says it's been downloaded, I see that it's nowhere in the Add/Remove section. If it was up to me, I would delete EVERYTHING that you acquired thru Frostwire, and then uninstall Frostwire completely. I'd then run Malwarebytes , ESET online scan and every other antimalware tool you can. If you still have trouble, find a computer shop and pay them to clean it up. Frostwire might be a useful tool for some, but if all you are looking for is free music then there are a multitude of ways to get it that carry little or no risk. Frostwire itself may be safe, but many who use it are not to be trusted. If you don't know how to protect yourself, you're better off to leave it alone.

Most laptops I've had do have several fan speeds.
The more heavy duty computing you do, the more likely the fan will click on and/or up the speed a notch or two.

You might look in Task Manager to see if something is consuming lots of cpu cycles.

Might want to Right Click the Task Bar / Task Manager / Processes(tab) / 'Show processes for all users'
and look down the list for anything using cpu cycles.

Sitting here typing this my laptop shows 2% cpu usage total right now.

You could also get something about 1/2 in thick and elevate the back end of the bottom of the laptop to allow more air passage and see if that helps

I always keep a couple of wooden clothespins in my laptop case. Anywhere I set up, I can whip out the clothespins and put them at the far edges of the laptop to elevate it, and therefore keep airflow going for the fans and the bottom of the computer.
Never had an overheat problem.

I once used my laptop primarily while sitting in bed. Not good. Laptop sinks into blankets and sucks up the dust bunny micro fibers. Presently looking into cooling pad myself. Preferably dual power sources.

I tried what mikie suggested, checking the cpu, and my computer was at 50 soemthing percent!
I am not sure what program was exactly causing it, the name was funny and I don't remember it, but I ended the process of the program taking up cpu. It took the cpu down to between 3-6. The fan seems to working fine right now....hope it stays that way.
Thank you guys so much for yoru help. You all gave me some great tips for air circulation. I hadn't even though of clothes pins.

Get a chill pad ours has twin fans in it, plugs into laptop, they have one at Shop4Tech.com for $6.63.

I can never find clothes pins when I'm out and think of it. Looked in grocery, looked in walgreens.
I often have that bright idea where a clothes pin would be a handy or ideal need ... for thing other than clothes usually. And not a clothes pin in sight.

Our local grocery store has them...although most are plastic these days..but they still work. I've also found them in hardward stores, and even Walmart one time.
It's the cheapest solution to the laptop-cooling problem I've found, and the most dependable becase I've always got the clothespins in the case since they are so small and easy to carry. :)

There was a recall on batteries overheating but didn't seem to see your model here?

HP is recalling lithium-ion batteries used in HP laptops and Compaq notebooks. Roughly 70,000 of the batteries were sold at stores, hp.com and hpshopping.com, from August 2007 through March 2008. Battery packs sold separately are also part of the recall.
