keep or get rid of older marble tub?

Our house was built in 1983, and we've slowly been working on improving the master bathroom. The shower/tub area is next: it's large, with a bay window, with lots of tile surround that needs replacing.

The tub is 6 foot marble. It has no major problems, but has quite a bit of etching and some staining from our hard water that is impossible to remove. If I'm planning to put in new tile (or granite or marble--don't know yet what will work best and be affordable) that I hope will last another 30 years, do I have to also get a new tub? Can anything be done to marble tubs to make them look like new, or do I just need to start shopping?

(I'm thinking a 27-year-old tub seems old, but my daughter says the Parthenon is made of marble and is older than that!)
