Decision Time: Air Tub or Soaking Tub
Comments (12)I've had my eye on a Toto Clayton tile-in airbath for a while. I can't say they are any better than a kohler or other brand; we just stumbled on it because we'd already bought a toto clayton toilet and thought we might stay in the same line as we redo the bath. As for the step depth, I remember reading about the design work of Shusaku Arakawa and Madeline Gins, who believe that we can defy death through architecture. They believe that houses that are physically challenging to live in are better, and their designs are frankly crazy by any standards we are accustomed to. I rolled my eyes when I first read about their work. One of their designs required crash helmets and hiking boots to tour, and some visitors broke bones. (I couldn't make this up if I tried!). But as bizarre as their designs are (you can check out their website at reversibledestiny.org), it did make me start to wonder, what if our houses required us to move and stretch a little more than they do now? So while I don't want to live in a house where visitors regularly fall and break bones, it seems to me that a navigating a deep step into tub is not asking for that much, especially if you have grab bars in the right places and a non-slip floor next to the tub. I suppose an indigenous hunter-gatherer would roll their eyes at our sedentary coddled lifestyle and think we're crazy to live in a way that allows diabetes and heart disease to become epidemic. So go ahead and get that airbath. Maybe you'll live a little bit longer :-) Here is a link that might be useful: toto clayton airbath....See Moreairjet tubs vs. whirlpool tubs
Comments (5)We have an Aquatics Infinity - which is both air and jetted. At first I wanted just air - had a Jacuzzi in 1992 in another house that after not using it for months had those "black specks" come out of the pipes from lack of use. (Talk about sceeve!!!!!)Told DH no way were we getting another jetted tub. But DH has a super bad back. The air just was going to do it for him. And they've improved the jetted tubs in 15 yrs. with the air flush after the tub is off the clear the lines. So we really shopped and priced them out. Yes - it's noisy - it's a motor. But you know what? That part doesn't bother me. It has enough power in the jets to hit DH in the spots that he needs, I get the bubbles that I want - and we're both happy. And we can put in bubble bath stuff too. (Minimum amounts or it's like the tv episodes where it overflows with bubbles). Good luck...See MoreToto tub vs. Kohler tub
Comments (1)I have a Kohler drop in cast iron tub and it is a very comfortable soaker tub. The cast iron also keeps the water warm for a long time. I had to replace the tub because it was 3 steps high on a raised platform. It made it very difficult to enter or step down into the tub from the top of the sides. I replaced it with a whirlpool tub to help my back. I installed it on the floor level so I can step into the tub and not down into a hole. Very important as you get older. The tub I have is 60'L X 42"W x 19"Deep. I am selling my tub as I no longer have need of it, since I replaced it. It is Forest Green porcelain with no chips in the porcelain. I am in Ocala, Florida. If you are anywhere near, you are welcome to stop by and go for a (test sit). for reference...See Moreany problems with air tub in shower/tub combo?
Comments (3)Do you have a specific tub in mind? We have a Bain ultra air tub and I couldn't imagine showering in it every day. The acrylic bottom along with the added height of the side.... to me it seems like an accident waiting to happen. I guess it would depend on the height of the tub you had in mind. In regards to the automatic air purge, it only happens after the air cycles off. You wouldn't be turning the motor on when you shower so the automatic thing wouldn't happen....See Moreworthy
