How to get it out of Safe Mode

I am working on a laptop(XP) and I went into msconfig and set it to default boot into safe mode....

Now when it boots up it comes up in safe mode, but the rest of the screen is just black...I can get to system restore and task manager, but there is no task bar and no start button and worst of all, no Run command to bring up msconfig and turn off the safe mode.

Has anyone ever encounter this before? I sure hope someone has some spiffy ideas!! lol

Sorry, just a little more information....

When it comes up in safe mode, you still see all the safe modes in all the corners and the XP build number at the center top....the display is working.

As soon as it boots up it comes up and asks do you want to try System Restore or do you want to continue in safe mode....I have tried everything before sending this message.

I have rebooted into Setup and tried to get it to reboot to the default settings, but that didn't work either....

Might try tapping the F8 key while booting and see if you can get Last Known Good Configuration that Worked or start Windows Normally.
Usually in safe-mode, you have the task bar and start button, don't know what happened to them.

In Task Manager (ctrl+alt+del) under file, try new task (run) and see if you can get back into msconfig or restore.

Glad owbist corrected me after assuming your son had the same adapter. Try the test with your adapter. If you can bootup without the battery in place and with your adapter plug in shut down and reconnect the battery and try it again. I had a recent black screen and this is what I did after trying all kinds of things all was fine afterwards. Hope it works for you.

You should have two options, restore and save your files as is or factory restore and lose everything and your PC goes back to factory settings. Have you tried F12 on boot up for restore options? And did you not burn your own set of recovery disks as asked to do when you got your W7 PC? and also a repair disk? this is something you need to do in the first week of setting up a new PC. lol, He installed to see if it would do the same when using it. Which it has not. Yes, does go to that start up mode. Windows would just boot & reboot, but Linux would open. Yesterday after posting this, we checked the connections and cleaned. Was surprise how much dust was in there from a cleaning done 2 weeks ago.... After that we had to wait for the battery to reset, the computer was on but nothing showed on screen. Today-deleted master boot record, recreated the partition table, repartitioned the drive & reinstalled windows. Haven't done any updates or installed anything but windows is working at the moment...Not sure if symptoms are going to reappear. Holding off on the updates and will begin installing that & programs one at a time. Well, will keep updated. Feel free to chime in or comment on anything at anytime. Juanita

Wow, that's super. Thanks for getting back so we can all learn something.
The Task Manager run command has saved me before, even with a black screen and the only thing working is Task Manager.
