Opening in safe mode?

Something happened to my laptop last night. I turned it on and evrything worked as normal. I left it on all night and this morning the log-in screen was up. I tried to log in but the screen turned black. When I tried to reboot I got a screen where I could choose to open in the safe mode. I used the arrow key to highlight Safe Mode and then hit Enter. The screen went black. I tried this numerous times with the same results. I then tried pressing the F8 key while turning the computer on, but it acted like windows was going to open and then it went black again.

I really need this laptop. Can anyone help me?

Not being able to boot to safe mode there is little we can do, if you could get to save mode I would suggest a system restore. Short of that do you have a recovery disc or anything,

Google Vista Black screen.

I'm guessing it's Vista because that's somewhat a common issue.

It's XP.

I found out that it will boot up just fine using the battery, but if I connect it to electricity then the screen immediately turns black. I now need to find out if it's the electrical plug, the connecting cord, or the laptop port.

Here is the skinny, Get yourself to the site raven suggested. If you are infected with System Check it is important that you do not delete any files from your Temp folder or use any temp file cleaners. This is because when the infection is installed it will delete shortcuts found in various locations and store backups of them in the %Temp%\smtmp folder. It does this so that you when try to launch a program from your start menu, none of your shortcuts will appear and thus making you think that your computer has a serious problem. Therefore, you do not want to delete any of the files in your Temp folder as it will remove the backups that we will use later in the guide to restore your Windows Start Menu. To make matters worse, recent variants of this family have been know to install the TDSS or ZeroAccess rootkits as well. These rootkits will attempt to stop you from using security programs that may help you to remove this infection. Good luck. Joe

Not really sure Lynn. I don't use the program but I did install it from my first link I provided you. I was able to run it and got an 89% all abode products have issues ha ha.. What i usually do in that situation if it's only 1 program having an issue is as we did uninstall it, delete the programs files folder if it's there after uninstalling. I mean you could try it again, this time reboot before installing again. Or you could see if the program opens in Safe Mode just for fun.

I run many of the same programs and I run them all regular not safe mode. If you are having restart issues with defrag in regular mode I have to ask do you remember to turn off your screensaver and any other hibernate or sleep modes or programs that would make the defrag do that restart? It is very important to turn all of that off when doing a defrag. Also defrag will start to have problems when you are beginning to get short on disc space, and having a good supply of RAM is helpful too. If you would like suggestions for other very good programs to add to that list I would suggest Spywareblaster and possibly SpywareGuard both free and both super programs. available here http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/products.html the spywareblaster free version you do have to remember to open it and hit the update button about once a week so it can get the new definitions then hit the enable all protection button to get it started. There is an option to pay a fee to get the auto-update.

Raven,I went in & reset it. The first setting removed the task bar completely.So I went the other direction,keeping notes.No setting changed anything unless I went too far & it got crappy. I at least got my task bar back. I've tried to do a system restore & it acts like I'm restoring back about a month but when I get the final note it didn't actually go back at all.What's up with that? It has dawned on me I spelled graphics wrong.No wonder I couldn't find it in my dictionary. rose

The ac adapter is probably malfunctioning or the connection at the laptop where the ac adapter connects is bad.

Google ac adapter for your model if changing outlets has no affect.

Thanks for your help zep516. It wasn't the wall plug. I am going to use the ac adapter on my sons laptop to see if it's not working right.

If the connector port on the laptop is the problem, what are my options?

Pull the battery out of laptop plug your sons ac adapter into the outlet and see if you can boot up with the battery out.

If your son does not have the identical computer make absolutely sure the adapter is the right size. You don't want an unpleasant surprise.

Glad owbist corrected me after assuming your son had the same adapter. Try the test with your adapter. If you can bootup without the battery in place and with your adapter plug in shut down and reconnect the battery and try it again. I had a recent black screen and this is what I did after trying all kinds of things all was fine afterwards. Hope it works for you.

My son and I do use the same (1) adapter. I haven't tried his yet, as he hasn't been here. I can plug my laptop to the wall plug, using the adapter, and it will charge the battery, but then must unplug it before turning it on. Very strange.

I will run the test with his laptop as soon as I can today and report back here.
