Safari Browser from Apple Available for Windows

I downloaded Apple's Safari 3.0 beta browser to use on Windows, XP in my case. This is my first visit to a website using Safari. It downloaded and ran without problem. It permits import of other browser bookmarks which I have yet to do - as soon as I find the location and filename of my other browser.

Keep us posted on how well it runs. Some are experiencing problems as evidenced by a web search. As it's Beta probably some issues.

Post back after a few days so we know what you think.

I just read that it has already been hacked. LOL!

That does seem better, Zep516. Thanks. I had turned off the phishing filter,without noticing much difference, but disabling it improved the speed. I go to familiar websites for the most part and keep my anti-virus and anti-spyware software updated. Mikie, I could not switch to Apple, it's just not my cup of tea ;-) Pam

Owbist is right, of course- try 'em and see! But I did like reviews for K-meleon and Iron, in addition to Chrome, Safari, Opera; I also didn't realize how big an improvement IE8 evidently is over IE7. So first off I'll suggest she go ahead and update 7 to 8, and see how she likes that. (I was wrong to say she's using IE8 now; she never upgraded.) I liked K-meleon on another machine, so I'll download that to this (laptop) computer and she can play with it here, and I think I'll encourage her to try Iron on the desktop, and I'll try it out there. Why, we're even likely to start huggin' in the hallway as we pass each other instead of just sending love-notes via e-mail ... ;-) Thanks all- I appreciate the help yet again! Best, M

grandms, thanks --- I think that I am getting all updates, including those for IE8. When I attempt to use IE8 it runs into a connection problem Â "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage." Next, when applying the Diagnose Connection Problem, it cannot detect any problem with internet connection. Following that, it gives the ordinary reasons, bad typing, site temporarily unavailable, DNS is not reachable, DNS does not a listing for the websiteÂs domain, etc. Â irrespective of the site attempted, including attempting microsoft.com, the ultimate culprit. This incident is typical of my disdain for Microsoft. If I want a browser, like Firefox, I download it and it runs. If I download IE8 because it is "beautiful" versus 7, I do it and it becomes broken, but cannot return to IE7. I think (now that is dangerous) that along the way I, or some program, wiped out something that is basic to Windows and/or Explorer. Reading several forums and postings by others shows various solutions none of which has corrected my case. But I am not trying very hard because I have alternatives that work. And like zep says, you cannot ignore the noise coming from the engine.

For some reason, I just cannot fall in love with Firefox, even though I have had it on my computers through various versions including 3.5. And IE is absolutely so slow, even v.8 that I use it only when I have to. I keep going back to Opera since I have never had the problems that others have had with GW. I do use Chrome to view a few websites, just because I like to keep it up to date. It's nice and fast and both it and Opera are not loaded down with a bunch of add-ons---just not necessary.

I downloaded it but the JAVA will not kick in when I go to play a game online that requires it. Nice interface though.

Nice move, but what Apple really needs to do is pay MS their iicensing fees and remove the incompatibilities with various MS content on the web and elsewhere. I think Apple OS is flat-out superior but it remains a Windows-content world. I'd like to see the bariers removed.

I've used Safari for a couple of days and here are my impressions. It downloaded, installed, and loads without any problem. With it you also get "Bonjour Service" which, I think, is used for local networks, and connecting devices. Upon my second day of starting Safari, the Bonjour software again wanted access past Zonealarm. At that point I decided I did not want to see Bonjour anymore, did a file search, and deleted files. It had not appeared in Startup files. As to a browser, it is a little faster than Firefox, IE, and Opera in opening new pages. I did not like the browser appearance as I am accustomed to others. Its opening page contains "advertisement" buttons that include Apple, Store, Mac, iPod, iPhone, Downloads, and Support. It also has a bar with buttons for YouTube, Apple, Amazon, Ebay, and a button for several News sites. I have read that the advertisements are paid by the companies. The few News sites that are there are either paid for by the news companies or are "associates" of Apple but I classify them as "liberal" and I don't need politics on my browser. The browser appearance is slightly dull looking in one sense but the websites that are found seem to have a little more vivid color than other browsers. The box on the browser used to input a word or site to search for is smaller than on other browsers and a little more difficult to manipulate, i.e., more difficult to erase and type in something different. Summing: as a browser, it works as well as others but it is a little different. I see no advantage for me to use it versus Firefox, and after a couple more days, I will probably remove it.
