always use the most current Browser,

What does that mean,please??? I saw it in another post. How do you make sure your browser is current??? Thats a new one for me to learn!

If you have Ie6 that would be an unsecure browser. If you have IE7 thats micorsofts latest incarnation and If you allow or keep current on windows updates, IE will have the latest security patches for your protection.

I dont know how FireFox handles security but I do know lots of people run old versions which is a bit risky security wise. Firefox users seem to think they dont have to worry about security. I dunno about that.

For instance if you use Internet Explorer, you really should be using IE7, It's the most current and safer.

If you use firefox (Mozilla) you should be using version #2.0.0.12 that is the most current browser for firefox...

To find out what version you have in the browser click "Help" and then click "About" that will tell you the version

leave it alone when you did the update it should have taken care of everything you are mentioning, the IE icons will now open your new IE8, IE6 is still in windows and should be able to be used if you were to remove IE8 and revert back to IE6 but that is certainly not advised. anytime you add a new browser when it asks if you want to import your settings, faves, homepage,etc from the old one say yes so that your new one will have all that the old one had as you had it set up, it will even copy your favorites list for you so you have all of those on the new one. It will also ask if you want to make firefox your new default browser or not when you first install firefox you don't have to do that you can always change it later if you decide you love it and want it to be the default. Also when you first install firefox it will open to the firefox home page to let you know you have successfully installed it, that does not mean it has changed your homepage to firefox, it does that one time only, if you shut it down and re-open it you will find it opens to your homepage if you had it copy all of your settings that is.

it sounds like you are clicking on the red x at the top of your IE if so you are then closing the entire instance of IE so you would no longer see the application running. you do not have to go back to favorites, you can simply type in a new address in the url bar and hit go to go to that site, or if you want to go to just another open blank window right click on the page you are on and select open new window then you have the one you were on still open and the new blank one open, you can then use the blank one to go where ever it is you want to go. any time you only have one window open and hit the red x you will close the entire application.

Malwarebytes is much better than spybot, however the browser hijackers are very hard to fully remove, you could go to this support forum and ask for help to clean it they will have you run some special programs on it to get it all cleared off. But that was likely part of the original infection so I would say whoever supposedly cleaned it did not do a very through job Analysis and Malware Removal you will need to register there and post your request for help in that area.

A browser is that which enables you to go to various websites: Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, etc. If you look in Control Panel/Add-Remove programs, it should list the version you are currently using. The latest IE is version 7; Firefox is currently 2.2 (not sure about this), and Opera is 9.26.

If you are using a version of Windows, then Internet Explorer came on your computer. If you are using an Apple computer, then your browser is called Safari.

When I click to bring up my browser, Firefox automatically tells me when there are updates, and I always accept them. Right now I am on 2.0.0.12 and assume it is the most recent.

Can the tabs be disabled in IE7, possibly a setting change? I still use IE6 and hated tabbed browsing in IE7 when I tried it. I last updated IE6 on Feb 14, but I guess it's time to move into the next century ;-)

Yeah, Tools, Internet Options.
On the General Tab theres a settings button for Tabs.
A single simple checkbox enables/disables tabs.

Am I the only person that noticed how much slower IE7 is than IE6? It's like dragging an elephant behind a bicycle! I guess security has a price too.

I don't think my IE7 could be any faster. Sometimes I wonder if I actually clicked a link because the page changes so fast.
First start after a fresh boot may take 1.5 seconds, but after that its near instant starts, way faster than a second to open a new ie window.

See if this speeds it up,

In Windows Internet Explorer 7, go to the Tools menu, select Phishing Filter, and then click Phishing Filter Settings. In the dialog box that appears, under Phishing Filter, select Disable Phishing Filter.

I rarely use IE and use Firefox. But lately, FF has been slow and I've used IE and it is fast. I do have the phishing filter disabled. Now I flip back and forth depending which connects faster. Lately, it is IE. I just hate that you can't block the flashing crap. With FF you can stop it by using Adblock.

That does seem better, Zep516. Thanks. I had turned off the phishing filter,without noticing much difference, but disabling it improved the speed. I go to familiar websites for the most part and keep my anti-virus and anti-spyware software updated.
