browser hijack

My computer was in the shop last week for removal of a virus and spyware. My DH clicked on a link in an email from a craigslist....I know, I know....I've told him a million times not to do that! LOL

They got it all cleaned up but, now it appears that I have a browser hijacker. If I do a search on yahoo or google when the results list comes up and I click something it takes me to a unrelated site, not every time but most.

I am taking it back in today and making them fix it because this never happened until they worked on it.

Bad thing is I will be without a computer while they fix it.

Someone suggested I just download Spybot Search and Destroy and just run it myself to fix it.

Question is, would that be a solution or am I better off taking it back in??

Delete the browser's cache-history-cookies...see if that makes any difference. Download and install Malwarebytes and allow it to do a full scan. Let us know if the situation improves.

Malwarebytes is much better than spybot, however the browser hijackers are very hard to fully remove, you could go to this support forum and ask for help to clean it they will have you run some special programs on it to get it all cleared off. But that was likely part of the original infection so I would say whoever supposedly cleaned it did not do a very through job

Jean, on the main page of each forum, at the bottom, there's a link called "Technical Problems". You can also use the Contact Us link found in the green banner at the bottom of every page and it will take you to the same form. As Sushi suggests, it is always best to include the links to troublesome threads in your email, and the member's name. Perhaps people are on Easter/Passover vacation this week? Surely there is someone at the wheel, don't you think?

I had good luck removing a browser hijacker with Windows Defender about a year ago. It's free at the Microsoft Download site. Maybe it will help you.

Spybot is ok for a second tier application. MWB is first line. If you want to try another application before taking the system in you could try SuperAntiSpyware. As with any application be sure to update the dat files before using.

Took it into the shop that had it last week. Obviously they missed something. They are fixing it at no charge.
Which is what they should do.

you are correct they should have taken care of it when they had it so that is good that they are going to take care of it for you. Let us know how it is when you get it back
