Henry, your statement "Is the pruning and cutting shears warning relevant to PNRSV in roses?" Response -- found in this paper: http://pub.jki.bund.de/index.php/JKA/article/download/605/1515 Pertinent statements from above paper quoted below: "PNRSV and ApMV transmission by seed, pollen, on cutting implements and by root grafting from infected plants to healthy plants has been reported and the results showed that root grafting is involved in the natural spread of the virus in roses (Golino et al., 2005)." Note "...and the results showed that root grafting is involved in the natural spread of the virus in roses." This means that claims of transmission via "cutting implements" were dismissed because of root grafting. Root grafting would require that roses are planted very close together, and results in contact more intimate than occurs via pruning equipment. Also: "Because the only proven means of transmission of RMD in roses is through vegetative propagation of infected buds, scion or root stocks, the use of clean and virus-tested production material is essential to improve productivity in gardens." When you pull up references that say what you want to say and post them in isolation, you are neglecting to acknowledge that those statements were later further evaluated and discounted. The paper I cited is from 2010. Any rebuttal of the above must therefore be more recent to be taken seriously. :-/ ~Christopher

Uh-oh... Botanus uses Simple Pleasures Cannas and that is the same supplier that I got my diseased Cannas from. There is now a huge problem with Cannas and most places that used to have virus-free Cannas now have infected stock. Many distributers will not admit this because they either aren't aware of the extent of the problem or are more interested in keeping the money (Botanus is a reputable place, so I'd bet they aren't aware of the extent of the problem). I have seen estimates that 50-80% of Cannas on the market now are infected - I have no idea if that's true or not, but it doesn't sound good :-( .I still have yet to receive any acknowledgment from the place I bought mine at - they're dropping the ball on this one big time! Did they say exactly what 'weather related' conditions they think caused that? It sounds like kind of a cop-out - shoving the problem onto your growing habits... Can you take a better picture of the leaf, trying to get a clear picture of any yellow mottling? The browning around the edge of the leaf could very well be because of inadequate watering (cannas need LOTS of water), but your photo appears to show yellow streaking and mottling. If it's a result of a trick of the light, it would be good to get another view. Compare it with my photo above - you're looking for that sort of streaking. Mine is obviously infected (no doubt about it), yours doesn't look so obvious, but a better photo would clear it up. BTW, that is definitely not a Futurity!! Futurity has deep red leaves, and as you know, a reddish/deep pink flower, depending on weather it is the pink or regular variety. You should definitely get a credit for that mix-up, but I would advise against getting more Cannas with it (at least getting any more cannas from Botanus/Simple Pleasures). If you want a big tropical looking plant, look into Colocasia or some of the cooler bananas. Or try growing some Cannas from seed - they're fast to grow and many will bloom the first year. The virus does not appear to infect the seeds. BP

Hi, I'm new here and hope I can help you out. This is how I retrieved my mail from OE from and old windows program to Windows XP Hopefully it will work for you. Back Up Outlook Express Messages Microsoft stores Outlook Express messages in a subfolder buried deep beneath the Windows folder, where it's nearly impossible to back up. That can mean disaster if you have a disk crash, or if you replace your PC. When you restore your backed-up data files, you discover that your email is gone! Fortunately, Outlook Express 5.5 (included as a component of IE 5.01 with Service Pack 1 and in IE 5.5) allows you to change the default location where messages are stored, making it easier to back them up with your other files. Follow these steps: Open your My Documents folder, right-click on any empty space, and choose New, Folder from the shortcut menu. Because you'll use this new folder to hold your mail messages, give it a descriptive name like My Mail. From the main Outlook Express window, pull down the Tools menu, choose Options, and click the Maintenance tab. Click the Store Folder button. This opens a dialog box that allows you to select the folder where you want Outlook Express messages to be stored. Click the Change button. In the Browse for Folder dialog box, select the folder you created in Step 1 and click OK. Note that the path to your My Mail folder now appears in the Store Location dialog box. Click OK to save this change, and click OK to the warning message that appears next. Close the Options dialog box, and then close and restart Outlook Express. All your message files are now in a convenient location in the My Documents folder. Back up the entire contents of your My Documents folder today and you'll be well protected from data disasters! Now that you have them saved in a new file...... Save on a disc just like you did your other files. In your new computer, Go to OE mail and open... Go to File..Import.. messages Select Program - Example (Microsoft outlook express 6) Specify location - Import from an OE6 store directory Location of messages - Browse to fine your file. Select Folders you want to import - Click Next and it will add them to your new Outlook Express. You can do just the ones you want or pick them all at once. Good Luck to you.

Two steps backwards, one step forward. While dealing with the impending death of my own pc's hard drive, I had plenty of time to work on her computer. I opened the case. Cleaned out the dust bunnies much more thoroughly than I had in October. I found the fan - and actually took it out and cleaned it thoroughly (mostly compressed air, and a little damp cloth). I did remove the label and add a drop of WD 40. (While I was at it, I searched for replacement fans in case this didn't work - and bookmarked some - it would be so simple to replace if needed.) Put the pieces back together and started it up. Still noisy. I started organizing her files, deleting duplicates and ridiculous things she didn't even know she had on there. I put everything in logical folders - then copied her 16GB of video (Ipod videos and flip share) onto a 32mb flash drive. Deleted 8gb of that video bc. it's also on her ipod. Then I ran auslogics defrag. Defrag was 100% successful - and she now has about 15GB free on a 40GB drive. Now the noise is less. I hear the fan a little - but you have to stop to listen. Not sure if it just took running a little for the oil to do it's thing. From what folks said earlier, it's unlikely that freeing up space and defragging reduced the noise. So far, so good. (I even think I could have turned it on with the case open - but i didn't have to.) Thanks. Lynn.
