Tell me about...Adobe Reader

Yesterday I had a popup that I need to update my Adobe Reader for security risks...I've never paid any attention to Adobe Reader, but thought I should go ahead and do that. Did I do the wrong thing...I'm not sure I "had" Adobe Reader before this, but surely I did...or was it a "takeover" of some kind (paranoid) Anyway, now there is an icon on my task bar in the right hand corner indicating it is uupdating. Will that icon be there after it is updated and should I "have" Adobe Reader? My daughter sent me an e-mail with an attachment and it came via Adobe Reader...will this cause me any problems...I'm sooo in the dark

Adobe Reader or a clone is essential on computers these day Maybee. This is needed to access PDF (Portable Document Format) files.

I believe Adobe created this for security reasons. Prior to this if a Word document was sent it could easily be re-written where a PDF file could not. That is out the window now as there are a myriad of PDF clones to use.

I have "Foxit" for pdf files I download from the web, am told it takes up less space on disk than Adobe, only problem is I cannot uninstall Adobe Reader from the control panel something about ActiveX.

This month my Book Club read: 1,000 White Women-The Journals of May Dodd by Jim Fergus I thought it was wonderful! I'm usually not a big fan of historical fiction, but this was great! Based on a true event, and then the author writes about what could have happened. Back in the 1850's the Cheyanne Indians wanted to increase their tribe numbers, so they asked the US govt to "trade" 1,000 white women for 1,000 horses. The US govt said no, but in the book, they agree. Very interesting idea. Characters were outstanding!! Written in journal form and quick read. Some language & violence esp at the end, but it's not too bad. Next month we read: Whistling in the Dark We read Water for Elephants at the beginning of the year and I thought it was okay. Normally would have never read about the circus. Others seemed to like it more then me. Read Life of Pi, but it took me about 3-4 times to get through it! Has anyone read Middlesex? I want to know if it's worth reading. Ii don't mind the topic, but it seemed really hard to get into? I've got my list made of all the books you guys have recommended. Teresa-who once had a dream about being locked in a library all night. (Wouldn't be so bad!)

Maybe look into getting photoshop elements instead. It will allow you to make posters and flyers with all the fancy fonts you have. It usually runs between $79-99 and you can buy it on the dvd at you local staples or office depot.

In my yard, they tend to ignore the feeders and focus on flowers. These are their favorites: Black and Blue Salvia mentioned above, Agastache (I have several varieties), and their super-favorite Redbirds in a Tree. But this time of year, those flowers are not really in bloom, so I hang a feeder.

AR has become an inflated and cumbersome application. Plus as you now know it is a real pain to remove from a system. Since I have plenty of disk space I just leave it on-boardand dormant as I too now use Foxit. I recommend it to all who will listen. All I had to do was insure that FI was the default reader for pdf.

A new version came out not too long ago and I have had no concerns with it. You can get it at Filehippo.

I see...I guess I just wasn't aware of it until it wanted this update...I can't see that it causes me any problems....it's just that when I got that attachment and it opened with Adobe that I began to wonder more about it. I do see where there is Adobe Activex also. Thanks for your replies
