Please recommend low end dishwasher!

I need to replace my mother's dishwasher ASAP. She cannot get out to shop and compare and her only requirements are low price and that the color matches. :)

Any particular brand or model that we should look at in the under $500 range?

Take a look at a Fridgidaire at Lowe's. Should do it.

IN that price range, I'd recommend Maytag way above Frigidaire. It's the one thing they still make that has a decent reputation and good repair history. Any of them priced at about $400 and up should have the 3 spray arms and 1/3 hp pump that will get your non pre rinsed dishes clean. What you get with more $$ spent will be a quieter wash and more racking flexibility. Don't forget to remind your mother that all modern DW's need a drying agent (Jett Dry etc.) in order to really get your dishes dry.

Amazon does not sell Miele dishwashers. evVive Home is selling Miele dishwashers through Amazon.com site. That particular Miele was recently discontinued. There is no Miele model with cheap plastic. It has a less expensive white door exterior instead of SS, but the interior tub is SS. It does not have built-in water softener. It has the loudest Miele sound rating. Q1. It does not have all the specialty cycles. Example China, Crystal, Starch and Cheese. It does not have all the various sensors. Load and Dry for example. LED lighting,auto open door(to let steam out at end of cycle), luxury auto close, 3D cutlery rack, wifi monitoring by Miele headquarters of the TOL models. BTW What is the quote to fix the Optima? Are you using rinse aid? Does your Optima have the Extra Dry option?

I just had a new dishwasher installed, I went with a Kitchenaide (KUDE60FVSS.) I am very happy with it but ended up spending more than I had originally planned. What I learned in the hunt for a dishwasher is that things aren't what they used to be. The expectation of a workhorse DW that'll last forever, wash quickly, dry well....well, the new ones aren't neccessarily like that. Compliance with Energy Star guidelines (not to mention corporate buy outs) have changed the world of dishwashers. I have no doubt there are lots of economy DWs that you'll be very happy with, but expect some trade-offs. On your question about stores, we bought all our appliances from Lowe's--an assortment of brands-- and were very pleased. Best advice I can give you about Lowe's....in the appliance dept. ask to speak with and work with their Appliance Specialist. The specialists in the store are very knowledgable. But,like other big box stores the dept. may get staffed with an assortment of employees who may or may not know appliances. Don't be shy to ask for their "Specialist." It's a position they have in most departments and it's the best way to take advantage of their expertise. That said, there's no substitute for doing your own research (like on this forum!). Regardless of the brand you get, you can get a pan liner for under your dishwasher at an appliance parts store. Cost is about $30. We debated about whether these were a wise idea and decided yes. The pan does not have a fourth side on the front and is designed to direct any leaking toward the front of your dishwasher, so you will spot it right away. The con is that the leaking water would likely ruin your wood floor, but the pro is that you would catch it sooner and perhaps not ruin the cabinets too. It would definitely help catch a slow leak sooner. I think it is great the Bosch has an internal(?) one. We miss the 90s era Maytags. Quiet and we loved their racks. We could fit so much in them, with one side of the upper being slightly higher (yet still fitting glasses). We bought one for our old house, and when we moved here, that was what we bought when the existing one went out. However, Maytag had a huge recall with fire risks. We opted to have the door retrofitted rather than take the coupon. After 5 months, the door bent from their universal retrofit part and it would no longer close. No money off a new one, no return repair visit, so no more Maytag. We have a Kenmore, 3 yrs old. It is just okay. Quiet enough, but doesn't fit nearly enough larger items. On that point: the soap release is in the door, but low down. If you put a moderately tall item next to it, the soap will not release. Very annoying. The silverware tray developed a hole after less than a year and all I got was "sorry" from Sears. Oh, and I just got my hood from AJ Madison, and it looks great. Good service each time I called. I'd definitely shop there for appliances again.

Morz8 the handle does protrude all of my kitchen aid appliances have that handle, I actually love it and the little shot gun shell badges on the ends but I sure understand your point. But kitchen aid does have a line that has a sloped handle that only protrudes at the center and one that has no handle at all. I looked at all of them when I bought mine. I specifically wanted the ones with the bar handles. I imagine I may bump a hip a few times on it and the same one on my KA stove. I don't have the KA fridge but I have been looking at it. My GE profile survived the flood, after a $500 replacement part, and is working fine, but I am considering moving it to the sunroom and getting the KA fridge I have been lusting over lol.

Deb, if you live in Canada, I would highly reccommend the Brada for $349, Euro wash system, all electronic controls, stainless steel interior, adjustable upper rack, etc. We love it, specially for that price. Availalbe only at The Brick.
If you live in the US-I can say that we owned a Maytag for 13 years with not one cent spent on repairs. You should be able to purchase that for between $425 and $499 plus tax.

We're in the Chicago area. I appreciate the advise!

Right now I'm looking at the Sears website. There is a 20% off sale after midnight tonight but I hate to buy something sight unseen. There are no pics of the insides. I probably should make sure that the controls are easy enough for an elderly person.

Deb, many Kenmore models have the use & care manuals onine. GE, Whirlpool, Maytag and Frigidaire also have their model use & care manuals online--so you CAN look at the insides.

I got our Bosch recently for under $500. It is a discontinued model and our appliance store quoted us somewhere around $450 for it. Delivery for all our appliances (range, dw, Advantium, refrigerator, w/d) is around $200 and our plumber is installing. So if the $500 is just for the appliance you might find a Bosch, but delivery and installation would probably bump you over that. I had the lowest end Bosch available in our last kitchen and loved it so I'm doing the same thing again.

BTW, our local appliance store beat internet prices by about $100 average per appliance with no dickering and was also cheaper than Sears. . . . (And much, much nicer and more helpful to me!)

I also highly recommend going to a local appliance store. I have a family owned appliance store in my area which beat the lowest Lowes/Sears/ and internet prices for a new Kitchenaid by slightly more than $100. For ease of use for your mom, you may also want to look at the lower end Kitchenaids -- The KUDKO3 and the KUDC03 are both very simple, and pretty quiet compared with others in the same price range, with just a few cycles to choose from, but roomy and with SS interior. The lower end Bosches are simple, too, but I was told the new models would not be available for delivery until Sept. Good luck!
