I can turn them on[they light up]but then I can't get any sound. Are they goners or what?

What brand speakers, how old, have you tried to make sure none of the audio settings are muted...Very little info provided...is this a desktop computer or laptop, what operating system XP, Vista or Win7

Are you certain they are plugged in properly? Are you sure the audio isn't muted? Were they working properly the last time they worked? When was that? Can you plug them into a different computer to test them?

Another palamedes swallowtail has emerged this morning, also a little bit smallish, but a female. For a palamedes, she has a LOT of blue on the lower edge of her hindwings - There's a late instar palamedes cat in the same cage that this one came from that I'm quite sure is NOT going to be on the small side. I've named him/her STILL Eating, because that's what I say every time I look in the cage. I thought it was going to pupate a long time ago, but no big bowel expulsion has happened yet - it seems like it's eaten nearly a whole redbay! How to reinstall the sound driver (?) on my computer

You do not mention a make and model? Go to the manufacturers site and search for updated drivers being sure you use the correct model of computer. Once you download and save your audio drivers click Start click Control panel click Device manager in the new window look down the left side for the audio click the small arrow beside "Sound, video and game controllers" to drop down the files RIGHT click on the appropriate file then click Properties in the new window click the Drivers tab click "update driver...." A new window will appear, follow along. It will offer to search for the drivers you downloaded but will probably offer you the chance to point to where you saved the file. Not sure but you may be told to reboot to complete.

they were working that morning. I have a Dell Desktop about 5 years old...an Xp I checked to see if all was plugged in but the speakers wouldn't lite up would they. Any other suggestions

If you have a multimedia keyboard check the mute button. Also the volume buttons.

If you have volume controls on your monitor check them.

If you have a speaker icon in the System Tray (by the clock) check it.

If you have a mixer/audio manager icon in the System Tray check it.

On the Control Panel open the Sound Folder and check the settings.

On the Control Panel check to see if you have an audio manager folder, i.e. Realtek. Open it check the settings.

Open Windows Help and in the search bar enter "sound troubleshoot" sans quotes. Informational data will appear.

thanks guys. Don't ask me how I did it followed some of your directions and also went into my control panel and Sounds etc so whatever I did it worked. Your help was appreciated.
