What's on your desk right now? If someone who did not know you read that list or saw your desk what would they think about you?

Here is what's on my desk:

And I guess people would think I was a photographer. And also that I need to clean off my desk! LOL

I won't even begin to tell what is on mine but I know people would tell me I need to clean it off!LOL I have a big desk with lots of cubby holes so you can imagine.

They would think I am messy. I have an empty soda bottle, a phone, the computer, camera, a baggie with flower seeds, an empty pill bottle, a cigarette lighter, small flashlight, and a container of seasoned salt.

Since you are sitting at a computer why don't you take advantage of it and get rid of all that useless paper? You don't need mailers and newspapers - just copy the url onto a list or visit the url briefly and bookmark it. Why do you have paper lists at the computer when you could more easily be using some type of computerized organizational tool -- especially if it is linked to a PDA to take with you. I'm not sure why you would need more than one pen. Don't you have a drawer or at least a cup that can neatly store those types of office supplies - a pen, scissors etc.? Why did you bother to print out information from a website -- that data is going to be there whenever you need to access it through the internet. Is there some reason you have so much stuff to photocopy and laminate -- Why not create a folder and just do it five minutes at a time. I have a small desk area and take 5 minutes or so to consciously get rid of anything that I don't immediately need. Othewise it would become overwhelmed with clutter. It's really not different than any other "hot spot" -- focus on de-cluttering and then organizing it is much easier. As flylady would suggest - it's not a place to keep all one's projects out -- if you haven't finished a project, put it away.

Of course everyone's kitchen/needs/family is different, but I'm in the camp of "have a desk and am ripping it out". I do not have a pantry in my kitchen and would dearly love to have one. However, where the desk sits is not a good place for one. I do have cabinetry above the desk and that will be staying. When the desk comes out, I'm going back with storage, storage, storage. I'm having to have a piece custom built and stained, but am having great fun envisioning all the great storage I'm going to get when the desk comes out. Pot drawers, a spice drawer, etc. Right now our desk is the clutter catcher like (it seems) everyone else's, but I do agree that "clutter happens" and you have to give it a place. What I am really gaining by getting rid of the desk and going back with drawers, etc. is a huge amount of storage space that is simply wasted on little tiny desk drawers than can't hold anything substantial. We have never ever sat at the desk in the 15 years we've lived in the house. The space where the chair is supposed to go is another clutter catcher for extra 2-liters, etc. and as such is completely unsightly! We do have a computer desk area in another part of the house. The desk in our kitchen is very central. It was not thought out well at all in terms of kitchen design, so if it were off in its own nook or something I might feel differently. However, one of the big things I'm looking forward to is having one continuous run of countertop, where we currently step down for the desk. Just my two cents, to each his/her own, and good luck with your decision!

A couple of buffet lamps would be very nice (and good for working without shadows) -- perhaps a old globe? An old silver mug for pen or pencils? IF possible -- try to corral the necessary wires etc. to create a nicer view underneath. Perhaps stack a couple of lidded baskets under it to hold desk items?

I wish I knew how to post photos! I too wanted a desk area in my small kitchen (@ 12 x 18 ft) We designed our small kitchen like a ship - every inch is usable. My desk is an L shape - the short part of the L is @ 42", the long edge is 60". The desk height is 30" and has a normal chair. On the outer side of the small part of the L, we have an 18" wide set of 3 drawers on the lower part - two regular drawers and the bottom drawer is a file drawer. This short L part is a standard 24" deep as it is the wall that continues from the other cabinets (it is next to built in ovens/cabinets to the ceiling though, so the lower desk height is not next to the other counters which are 35.5" high). Over this short L part of the desk, are bookshelves to the ceiling. On the part of the desk over the drawers sits my printer. The rest of the lower area (an L shape @ (42 - 18) = 24 x the 60" long L part is open. I tuck a small recycling bin for paper near the wall, hidden by the drawers, and there are plugs, etc. for the computer. The long L is only 20" deep (this wall continues on to be a 20" deep window seat that have deep drawers that can be opened without disturbing the cushions). We have the necessary cords come up through a grommet. There are additional plugs above the desk level for the phone and to recharge things. The wall above has Italian pottery plates as art. Thus, when sitting at the desk, the drawers and bookshelves are to my left. To my right is a 7' window seat and tall windows. Thus, the entire 12 ft wall at this end of the kitchen consists of the 5' (long L) portion of the desk and a 7' window seat with storage underneath (the window seat is also an L actually - it mirrors the dimensions of the short L of the desk, so it is all symmetrical. Thus at this end of the kitchen I have more than 200 linear feet of bookshelves for my cookbook collection/accessories. A desk surface that has 78 linear feet (42 + (60-24 depth)), and a window seat that includes five - 18" deep x 18" high x 20" wide drawers where I store large shaped things like vases, deep stockpots, baking things (rolling pins, boxes with cookie cutters, waffle irons, etc). No clutter, lots of storage, and with the tall windows to the yard, it makes the whole kitchen feel open and light.

Besides the ordinary papers, pens and a big ol' coffee cup.. I have 4 letters ready to mail and a stack of cards I just made for a great aunt.. people might think I don't know how to send emails. They would probably wonder too why my DH's hair trimmer is in here. (I've been using it on the cat! lol Works great on mats!)

right now? it's trash heaven! normally i have a paperback reference books, the printer, a picture mug (my adult kids) with pens, clock (i know redundent with the computer)stapler, phone....few other goodies...

Not so much on the actual "desk" because I have things spread out onto the other furniture in a U-shape. Changing this spare bedroom into a real office was the best thing I ever did!

A "tip" jar (don't ask--LOL!)
A huge paper clip looking note holder
A stack of small notepads
Two bank statements waiting to be reconciled
Hand lotion
A basket that holds pens, pencils, highlighters, an emery board
A holder for the magazines I edit
A desk lamp to keep my "mouse" hand warm
A newspaper clipping to reference in a future USAF article

Four Post-It notes for the job I'm doing now

Oh the joy of moving! :) LOL

Lets see, my puter, monitor, printer, keyboard, mouse, digital camera, phone, mouse pad and a fan, paper and pen.

Usually my desk was VERY messy.

I wonder, if I could keep it this neat?

A small lamp, 18 inches tall ceramic giraffe, my purse, pictures of grandkids, church bulletin, donation form to St. Jude's, letter from the Rep. Party, notepad, bowl of loose change, library books. And, dust. It's always dusty. Oh, and a Coldwater Creek catalog w/ the ugliest stuff in it and a bowl of pens and pencils. I should clean all that up!

not my other desk. LOL It will make me look neater.

3. Docking Station for one of my Cameras.

Right now - a cup of coffee.

I used to be absolutely obsessive about my desk and "in basket" being empty at the end of the day. That hasn't happened for years. LOL
