I feel for those people and they are in our prayers. Some 28 South Africans there as runners and 2 where injured (spectators)! One of those events that bring people together from all over the world, damn those responsible. I really feel for the father who lost a child, and possibly wife with I think daughter injured as well - just brings tears to my eyes! This post was edited by Beachplants on Tue, Apr 16, 13 at 16:44

The link below is the most info I've been able to find about the carjacking part of the whole mess. The bombers used the guy's ATM car to get cash, then let him go, while taking his car. Fortunately, the guy was able to call 911, and the suspects did not get away. One point this article makes is that terrorists frequently do stupid things. Media reports that federal law enforcement is always leary of this time of year. Waco and the Oklahoma Federal Building bombing were in April -- both concerned anti-government protests. Yesterday celebrated a Massachusetts holiday, Patriots' Day, honoring Colonials who fired on British forces at the beginning of the American Revolution. This 26-mile marathon included a memorial to the 26 killed at Sandy Hook. The bombs may turn out to be linked to home-grown anti-government movements. Let's not assume that -- or that the attack came from abroad either. We have to wait for more information.

If you can afford it, stay right in Boston. Boston is such a walkable city, and it would be a shame to lose that aspect. If you have to stay outside Boston, see if you can find something in Brookline or Cambridge, which have direct routes into Boston on the T and are still quite urban. Copley Square is nice (Copley Square Hotel, Lennox, Bullfinch, etc.), lots of shopping, old churches, gorgeous old public library (enter for a few minutes just to see the interior courtyard, which is a real treat). I love the Boston Harbor area (Marriott Long Wharf - gorgeous indoor pool overlooking the harbor) - you're within 10 minutes walking distance of the harbor, Faneuil Hall/Quincy Market, and the North End. Here are some of the things I plan for guests when they're here for a few days: - Faneuil Hall/Quincy Market. Wander through the Haymarket open air market. Watch the street performers. Have a drink at an outdoor cafe. Go up the back of Faneuil Hall and take the Parks Service tour. It's interesting, short, and air conditioned - and there are clean bathrooms. Have lunch at Durgin Park, which is the oldest continuously-operating restaurant in the country. - North End (you can do this on the same day as Faneuil Hall, if you're not tired). You get to the North End through the back side of Quincy Market - it's close. See the Old North Church ("one if by land, two if by sea") and the Paul Revere House. Wander around the streets. Have dinner at almost any restaurant, preferably on a side street. (Ida's, in a tiny alley off Hanover Street, is a favorite of mine.) Get pastries from Mike's or another pastry shop, walk over to the Rose Kennedy Greenway, and sit and watch the kids playing in the water. By the way, if you're worried that this is too much walking, you could walk the entire route straight through in about 15 minutes! - Do the Freedom Trail, but only part of it. Start at the State Street stop on the T (orange and blue lines), and catch the Parks Services talk on the Boston Massacre (or, as my British friend calls it, the Boston Incident:). Follow the red line of the Freedom trail past the Old South Church (the Parker House Hotel, which is nearby, has nice public bathrooms on the second floor!), through the Boston Common (you can see the Statehouse from there), and on to the Public Garden. Take a swan boat and see the Make Way for Ducklings statues. Buy the book as a souvenir. - From the Public Garden, you can go up Beacon Hill (not my favorite, but very pretty), or you can head into the Back Bay. Walk down Newbury Steet and shop or eat in the pretty outdoor cafes. - Walk the Esplanade. See where they do the famous Boston Pops 4th of July concert. Watch the boaters on the Charles River. - Take the T (red line) to Harvard Square and explore Harvard. If you like to walk, take the T to Porter Square instead, and walk back to Harvard Square. It's about a 1.5 mile walk filled with shops and restaurants. - From Boston, take the T (blue line) outbound to Wonderland, which is the end of the line. You'll be at Revere Beach, which is the oldest public beach in the U.S. Eat at Kelly's Roast Beef, an institution! From downtown Boston, it takes about 20 minutes each way, so you could easily go to Revere Beach, walk the beach, get something to eat, and be back within two hours. (Btw, I know you can also reach Castle Island Beach in South Boston by T, and it's interesting, but I don't know it as well, except that I know that Sullivan's is the recommended place to eat there.) Hope you have a great time. Boston is a wonderful city!

Was talking with my daughter earlier, and she told me her boyfriend was going to watch the Boston Marathon today, that it really is a city event, blah, blah, blah.

She was in class when this happened, so I texted him. Cannot tell you how relieved I was when I saw him text back. He told me that "We're okay. everyone is confused. We saw it happen but we're far away and safe now." My daughter sounded sick when I talked with her. She's so sad for everyone. They are growing up in a different world.

I'm still sick. Prayers for everyone.

CNN is doing the best job of reporting. There was another explosion at the JFK Library.

I am just appalled at some of the pictures I have seen posted by news reporting sites. Victims deserve privacy at these times, not to have their broken bodies published on the internet.

Cathy, so glad the boyfriend is okay.

Dedtired, I could not agree with you more regarding the coverage. I turned it off -- couldn't watch.

Thanks for kind words -- Cathy

Cathy, I'm also happy to hear the boyfriend is OK.

I agree that some privacy should be respected. It's not like we need to see the injuries, photos of victims are unnecessary right now. Media could just report the facts, instead of sensationalizing everything. (sigh)

My prayers and thoughts are with everyone there, and with law enforcement as they struggle to complete the investigation and find out who is behind this and why.

I had a strange experience today. I went to an outlet mall (bleah) near me today. I stopped at Starbucks for some coffee and put my shopping bag on the chair opposite me. When I was done I walked away without the bag. A young woman stopped me and said "you forgot your bag". I thanked her profusely and she said "we have to be careful anymore about bags left behind." That gave me the chills.

One news report I saw today zeroed in on a hockey skate of someone on an NHL team in black felt pen it said "Pray for Boston" Those are the type of media stories I like in times of awful tragedy. Hearing how brave people go above and beyond to help others. Media lets evil prevail when they focus on the gore and terrorized faces.

So Prayers from Northern Alberta for those affected by the happenings in Boston.

I heard an interview yesterday on a program on public radio called The Take Away, or something like that. Anyway, the host interviewed a surgeon that had completed the marathon 30 seconds before the first blast. Needless to say, he went to help, and after a long time working in the medical tent with nothing but adrenaline giving him power, he said he started to tire out. He felt like he had run a marathon. Well, he did, didn't he? It amounted to two marathons! Anyway, I was enormously impressed with this gentleman giving of his time and what energy he had left to offer help in this time of need. He said that most of the people coming to the tent had minor injuries, that the people with the worst injuries were taken straight to the hospital. I imagine there were numerous minor injuries that still needed a doctor's care. He was there for them.

Thinking of lori316 and her running family and of many many others. So so sad.

Heard from Lori via Facebook. Her sons were across the street from the explosion. They were there to cheer on other runners. Her boys are okay. Her late husband Bob had a connection to Martin, the young boy who died. Evidently Martin's running coach used to run for Bob. So very, very sad, but thank God Lori's kids are okay.

I'm so glad to hear that Lori and her family are safe, she's already been through much in her life.

My prayers are still in Boston, with the injured and their loved ones and with the officers who are investigating. I do hope they find the perpetrator(s) quickly.
