50s bath redo finally finished

Just in time for my nephew and his wife's visit last weekend, we finally finished the remodel of our small original master bathroom (with the exception of painting the window.) This forum provided a lot of wonderful inspiration as well as practical advice. I'm so glad I listened to the advice in an earlier post and did sconces on both sides of the mirror!

Wow! You must be so pleased with the results. It looks great! It's so clean looking and crisp. Is the tile in the shower the same as the tile on the floor?

I love your beautiful antique mirror. My father in law has a square-shaped one that's otherwise very similar hanging in his living room and I have always loved that one also.

Hi Kvil...as far as I know (and I am so not an authority), the honed is a smooth surface, it's just not shiny. Whereas the brush, while also not shiny, has a rough finish to it. We actually got the top from the place that built our cabinet for us - I know we overpaid, but it was a lot easier to have them do it. I know brushed is gaining in popularity - I'm sure you can find it if you look around - it really is a nice look and feel. I know there are a few other types too - antiqued, riverwashed, etc. It's enough to make you crazy!

Hi flyleft, I am very pleased with the Danze Parma. The Roman tub faucets and shower controls have a smooth solid feel when they are operated. I also have the TP hanger and towel hangers. Those all are doing fine too. My wife saw the Porcher lav faucet on a display with the oval sink at HD Expo and fell in love with it, so I splurged and bought those $$$ Porchers instead. Otherwise I had planned to use the Danze Parma there too. I did substitute another brand sink that was almost identical but much less expensive than the one HD Expo used. The sink is entirely on top of the counter. The Porcher is a really nice faucet although it is a little hard to turn off when your hands are wet. The control is a bit small and the smooth chrome is slippery. I do like that I can operate the control while my hands are still under the faucet and dripping into the sink instead of on top of the faucet.

abbycat, see result of Google search in the link. They all come up with the same model, which looks identical to the one we have. We had a bad leak under this sink earlier this year and dithered about working on the bathroom at that time; finally decided just to get it fixed. The plumber wasn't too hopeful but was able to get it working again. A few weeks ago, the faucet was leaking and my DH tried to fix it, but the whole thing that connects to the plumbing behind the sink broke off. This time, we decided just to get the whole thing redone -- we don't want to mess around with plumbing leaks, and the cabinet is just about ready to fall apart anyway. Thus this discussion. You must be in my neighborhood! Seriously, your baths are SO similar to ours in our 1964 house. Here's what we have done: Master bath--was Pepto Bismol pink. We had it reglazed in white and it's holding up well. We had the tiny tile floor ripped up and redone. Upstairs hall bath--was baby boy blue. DH tackled this one (very unusual!) by ripping out the floor and taking down the tile. He installed white beadboard and a new floor. The tub is the same exact style you have, which really is a high quality cast-iron tub. I hate the cliche that they "don't make things like they used to", but in this case, I really think it's true. This tub holds the heat like no other. It's worth saving, either as is, or having it professionally reglazed. First floor half-bath--DH painted the tiles with a latex paint in a beige and we then had the floor redone by a professional. We added another full bath in the basement area and used a one-unit tub/wall combo (not nearly as good at holding heat as the cast iron tub upstairs). We did tile on the walls and floors. Check out professional tile reglazing in your Yellow Pages. It will tide you over until you can tackle a reno. My advise is this: keep the cast iron tubs, but change out the faucets to a "mixer valve", which is fairly inexpensive. Good luck. I did all I could do to live w/ the pink and blue. No matter what I did it screamed "60's"!

Thanks for all the nice comments. Karena, yes, I did use the same tile on the floor and in the shower, just different sizes. Susan, a friend who knew I was remodeling found the mirror in a second-hand shop. She has a good eye, and I think it looks awesome with the sconces. I waited 30 years to get rid of the "bumblebee" :) shower; good riddance! I'm no longer embarrassed to have overnight guests.

Congratulations on a beautiful job! The mirror is gorgeous, too. BTW, is the tile fairly easy to keep clean? It reminds me a bit of carrera marble. I love the greys and whites in the tile. Where did you find the tile?

Karena, the tile is Italian, made by Imola Ceramica and the style is Excalibur Bianco. I found it at Floor and Decor. It is a porcelain ceramic, so the upkeep should be easy. I wanted something that had a marble look without the upkeep.

Thanks sjharris53! I do like the carrera marble look and so I was wondering, too. With the bigger tiles you also have less grout lines so that should help as well.

Love it!

Totally know that 'not embarrassed to have guests' feeling! We're just about done our basement/guest BR, and now it's the nicest one in the house! Our Master is still lovely Avocado Green, rivaling your bumblebee look for dare I say tacky and dated? :>) (though to be honest, I think your old BR looked nicer than ours does!)

Lovely bathroom... I hope you still come on here and can answer this. I am planning on using beadboard(I think that's what it's called) paneling in our guest bath remodel and I really like the way yours looks. Can you tell me where you got it from? Thanks!

Beautiful job! We are using the same Excalibur Bianco tile in our new basement bathroom shower, but in a pattern which mixes all the size tiles (8x8, 8x16, 16x16, and 16x24). Sounds crazy but saw a display board at my local Floor & Decor Warehouse which did this pattern and it looks terrific.

Only question now is what kind of solid stone to use for the shower bench seat and the kneewall ledge. The ledge will be next to the vanity which has a China White Marble top. My tile guy wants to use a granite piece there but I haven't seen a granite that I think is really complimentary to the marble look of the Excalibur tiles.

Any suggestions?
