Just did a huge Vista update now all is slow ???

Hi all I am running a vista 64X with a ton of ram, about 16 gigs I think. well just did a normal windows auto up date and there were 10 updates. Now its seems that I am crawling on the net is anyone see this reaction too? If so how do I get the speed back. I am on a dsl wireless and my indication tells me that I am at 54 MPS for the wireless.

Any ideas ... please help thanks.

Is your "crawling" with IE8, another browser, or both?

I did all the updates manually over a couple of days and have no concerns. In fact, I have noticed an increase in IE8 speed, and I am on an antique DUN, with no ill effect to Opera and FF.

It is unfortunate that you have this concern, but for those that are reading this thread this is an example of why I do not promote automatic installs. Historically, when there are a plethora of installs all too often too many users with concerns. There just seems to be too much new code, removal of obsolete code, restarts and new configurations for the system to handle on its own.

Exactly, you should have the MS Updates to "notify only" and then when you install, install them manually in pairs, so, if there is a problem with one of the updates, then it is easier to isolate the culprit

Repeat from another thread-- Did I get a scare when I went on my computer. I got all set and turned on my computer as usual. I can't remember if the welcome screen came but I ended up with a black screen with a dialog box saying: C\windows\system 32\config\systemprofile\Desktop refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on the computer or on a network. Check to make sure the disk is properly inserted or that you are connected to the Internet or your network and then try again. If it still cannot be located, the information may have been moved to a different location Then the message disappeared when I clicked OK and a black desktop with white blank pages in place of the icons were there and the start button with a few of the system tray items. I didn't have the option to shut down (that I remember) so pressed the power button and it blinked so I hit it again or I did the Ctrl, Alt, Delete and the computer booted up with the welcome screen and came up normal. WHEW! That is all I need? What do you think that was all about? Could it have been caused by the updates I did yesterday before I shut down? Windows 7 64bit

updating to vista need program for doc files

I wanted to update, I just read here about an open office program, but from reading that, I am now worried my old doc need to be all converted to the new office 2007. I saved money buying the student version so it only like 120 dollars on Amazon, but the full version with outlook is super expensive. I never liked outlook. I use gmail and windows calander. It's a new calander on vista. Any suggestions will be appreciated. When I get the new office 2007 student can I help my friend out by reading her old apple files? Will it be able to read apples files, because I heard the newer windows and apple would be compatable. She has some old apple files, she can't read on her new apple computer.

one good program that I use that will do a good uninstall of anything you may have on your pc you want to get rid of but ALSO has a feature to show you what is running at startup and with simple clicks lets you change those from on to off and vice versa is Revo uninstaller, it is free. Thank you mudhouse! I wish I could take credit for the plantings, but I have to credit the landscape architect. But, I do agree that I didnt want the lineality of some of the more modern mcm architecture. I agree with you- I do like that style, but wanted something more different for the house. That saguaro was moved there by happenchance, and it just happens to work great! I am sorry you lost your cactuses. I'm a big fan of cactus! That is good to hear, blfenton! I have to do this in stages. Thank you Lynn! You all have been so wonderfully helpful with advice and kind with your comments. LOL@desertsteph. Sometimes I do feel like I live in a fish bowl! I tore about 20 palms out - so no more palms. I hated doing it, but they werent healthy anyway. Yikes@scorpions! I do not like them at all (who does?). I was stung once years ago. I had also heard that they like palms. I dont think I saw any when they cut the palms down. It was kind of exciting to watch. I did look for scorpions and for bird nests. The only bad thing about removing the palms is that I feel bad for all the woodpeckers. I dont get so mad when they drink the hummingbird food now.

You might look in your control panel, updates, view installed updated and see if one failed & possibly buggered your speed up somehow.

For some reason after the current batch of updates my graphic card suddenly did an automatic reset and turned brightnes to Full blinding bright... from device manager I ran check for updates and it did do an update to a newer driver, from microsoft.
Perhaps check your wifi nice in device mgr for updated driver?? just a stab in the dark maybe.

The wifi speed of 54 is what my wifi always shows,, thats normal.

I quickly looked at release notes for the updates for known issues and there were none excpt a possible print problem on one.
No one seems to be reporting slow downs in ms newsgroups that I've noticed.

Like DA and Gene I have Windows Update set to notify only. With this many updates I only do two at a time should any of them cause an issue.

To be clear on my point, I am not too concerned with .dat file updates. My recollection in this mass of updates there was one for Defender, Rootkit, Spyware, and Junk E-mail.

I focus on the OS and IE updates. Like Bob I do two OS/IE updates at a time. On occasion I might throw in a single .dat update too depending on size. Then after the installation and a reboot if needed I test my browser and system. If all appears well I move on.

As far as the Vista SP2 update goes, since I am on an antique DUN it would take me over 24 hours to download the 384MB file. And that's if the connection held. I have contacted Microsoft and they tell me an installation disc will be available thirty days after the release date.

I forget exact size mentioned but vista sp2 via win_updates in English only - I believe they said the average install would be something on the order of 40mb.
The near 385mb 5 language self extracting stub version of sp2 download includes updates for win server2008 and all of the vista versions in 5 languages and the self install and also will extract to make a 1.4gb dvd iso.
