updating to vista need program for doc files

I changed to vista, and I did not buy microsoft office yet. I ordered on amazon, but it will take a week to get here. Is there a free program I can download to read the files until office arrives?

I wanted to update, I just read here about an open office program, but from reading that, I am now worried my old doc need to be all converted to the new office 2007. I saved money buying the student version so it only like 120 dollars on Amazon, but the full version with outlook is super expensive. I never liked outlook. I use gmail and windows calander. It's a new calander on vista. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

When I get the new office 2007 student can I help my friend out by reading her old apple files? Will it be able to read apples files, because I heard the newer windows and apple would be compatable. She has some old apple files, she can't read on her new apple computer.

All your old documents will open just fine in Office 2007.
It's the reverse that doesn't work, opening 2007 documents in the old Office 97-03, unless a person gets the patch at the link that owbist provided the other day on this thread

Don't know anything about old apple files.

You may have a borken EXE file association problem, probably from the Malware. The computer should be taken to a malware removal forum for further analysis. Broken EXE associations will show up in more thorough scans used by those forums. In the mean time here's a link for fixing the EXE association issue in Vista. opening zip files, go to paint program

open(unzip) see I said the words baffle me, I unzip the file, and the pages are there for me to work into a word document, and then into a pdf for ease in sending, but the editing isn't the same anymore, I get the pages in paint now, rather than just the unzipped format. I can click open with Microsoft Picture manager, and still get to the editing part to go to word document, but is another step added and I would like to go back to the short version of editing. I have all the facilities to unzip files, just am wondering why all of a sudden I have paint program when I want to just plain edit the pages I have. this is all Greek to me, too much to take in, and as long as I can still edit, tho it takes longer, will stick with what I have, perhaps someday it will rite itself? You know, every time I run into problems, I kick myself, for ever getting acquainted with a computer, had I known what a hoodo it would be for me to work with, I never would have gotten into this. I enjoy it a great deal, but sometimes it is just overwhelming to me. I am a laborer, not a secretary, and hard to work with this sort of stuff. I'll answer part of your question by saying that RW DVDs become less reliable over time as you write over them. Since I presume these are important files that you want to save, rather than change all the time, go with regular, name brand, good quality, single use DVDs...they're cheap. One DVD typically holds about 4.7 GB, and I presume that you will be prompted if you need more discs, but I don't know exactly how this works as I backup on an external hard drive. You might wish to consider that option as you can get a good, large hard drive for under $80 and it will do all of this automatically for you.

Thanks for the response. Nothing is checked and everytime I try to check anything it will not stay checked. This program is totally messed up for some reason. Gallery will not work at all. I deleted all of my pictures and reloaded the 2 memory cards I have. They did load pretty much in the order I took them but some still I have to look for. At least it didn't sort them the way "it" wants too. BUT Now I can't plug the camera in to load pics, it will only let me load by putting the memory card in the tower. It was always so easy to just plug it in before. Now that feature is messed up too. Another thing, it use to show pictures full screen and now it only shows them about 90% of the screen. I can enlarge to full screen but it has to be done on each pic I look at. Before they all were full screen without doing anything. Soooo frustrating! I don't know what happened to make this program work so bad. No kids or anybody messes with this computer but me. Thanks for your help. Nancy

I found if you go to microsoft down loads there is a free reader I can use to view my doc files until my new student office arrives. Problem solved. I still think I should convert the old docs to make them modern 2007, but that means opening them all and saving them all, horrors.

also, if you have any issues reading any files created with Office 2007, you may need Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats
