Windows Firewall Problem

Hi everyone,

Today when I started up my computer the windows firewall shield popped up and when I checked it out I found that Windows Firewall was turned off.

I rebooted but that didn't help.

I went into Windows Firewall and after a couple of trys I got it turned on.

Does anyone have any ideas as to why everytime I start my computer that the Windows Firewall is off?

I ran my spyware programs and Malwarebytes and Norton and nothing showed up wrong.

I have Windows XPSP3 and just the standard Norton Antivirus. Norton has what it calls intrusion prevention and it is turned on, not sure but could that be a firewall of some sort?

I can't figure out what is going on here.

I would greatly appreciate your help. Thank you.

The FW should not turn off by itself. Most likely some application is doing that. Check the Events Viewer for the error log.

I think I would run Malwarebytes again but in Safe mode this time. Unwanted company will often turn off the firewall for it's own devious purposes. Tap F8 during boot up for Safe mode.

you can certainly get a stand alone firewall if you do simply turn off the built in windows firewall. If you had a keylogger and the previous infection you mentioned I highly recommend you visit this help forum and ask assistance they will have you run some specific scans to determine if everything is now gone, it is doubtful that all has been removed. You need to register then post a thread in the area I link to, state everything you have had happen and give all the info you can, then follow the directions given. you need to tell us which version of windows you are using before we can really answer that question. If using Vista or windows 7 it is a decent firewall, however using a stand alone software firewall usually always gives you better protection and settings. Is your computer behind a router? most routers also have a hardware firewall in them which will give you some extra protection. Having both a software and hardware firewall is the best.

I have the exact same computer and I run several spyware scanners along with Avast anti-virus. No problems at all. One program I highly recommend that combines anti-spyware, temp file cleaner, registry cleaner, and a couple of other things is Advanced Windows Care. I keep it updated and run it about once every 10 days or so. It is not an anti-virus program. Give it a try and see how you like it. The link is for the free personal version. Might want to look in Control Panel, Security Center. I have One Care, which has its own firewall, and the Security Center shows it as active... If I open just the windowsXP firewall window, it too shows everything grayed out.

From what I just read on Norton pages, Intrusion Protection is part of 'Norton Internet Security', which includes a firewall.

I dont know their product but they seem to want to keep people in the dark. What is the Exact Name of your Norton Product ?

Hi Mikie,

It is just the plain Norton Antivirus, no bells or whistles. In other words I do not have the Security one. In 2008 I was told it didn't have a firewall and later found out that it did. I just booted up tonight and the shield did not pop up at all and so the windows firewall is on. What I did was do a check disk and a defrag and now it is not popping up. That was weird.

Still I think Norton might have had something to do with it as they have been known to have a firewall and not state it on the box. I know it is not good to have two firewalls going at the same time but since they do this stuff and don't inform the public I can't be sure if they changed their minds on this version and put one in with their updates. That is if they can do that.

The intrusion prevention says that it automatically blocks internet attacks aimed at taking advantage of vulnerable programs. Detects and prevents attacks from threats already on an infected computer.

It has antivirus, antispyware, advanced protection which says Intelligently monitors processes in real time to detect suspicious behavior and emerging threats. Uses Nortons SONAR technology.

It has email message scanning and Norton Insight, which speeds up the scanning process and increases computer performance by identifying trusted files that do not need scanning. I just ran it and it says trusted 86 percent and scanning 14 percent. It also catches trojan horses like last year. It is a lot more fancier looking than 2008 and is very impressive looking but like you said I agree that they keep people in the dark about their product. It shows on the list of not having a firewall but their security one does have a firewall. Since they block incoming stuff that made me wonder about the firewall being stopped by Norton. Do they are do they not have some type of firewall and they call it something else. Your guess is as good as mine. ???????

What does a firewall do?
It protects against intruders !

So the name 'Intrusions Protection' in itself indicates its a firewall - I would think.

If you open Security Center in Control Panel and push the drop down arrow on the firewall it would say 'Windows firewall is active' or perhaps yours now says instead 'Norton Intrusion Protection is active?

While thinking security and possible firewall problems ... might look at the little KeyScrambler Personal, the freeware version. If not already using it - its a very Simple install and forget little program.

If you do find out that Norton does not have a firewall, I would consider getting something better than the XP firewall because it is only a "one way". Vista is fine as its a "two way"
