Toto Cast Iron Tub May Be a Problem

After much indecision and agonizing, I ordered the Toto cast iron tub FBY1550P-#01. It arrived this afternoon and I am very concerned. When I tapped it on its side, it sounds like a bongo drum. My other cast iron tubs have always sounded with a resounding "think". This sounded like a steel tub with a porcelain overlay. It is sitting on my dolly so it is suspended from the ground. Does this sound right? It also has "Made in China" stamped all over it. Please give me some feedback.

Toto doesn't make steel tubs. Only cast iron or acrylic.

My guess is that they were already installed. The mud bed adds a lot of thunk, compared to tapping on an uninstalled tub.

We had heard that Toto was not going to be selling residential tubs anymore. Hope that's not true--our 1525's are really nice tubs (read about them here on GW). If you can still get a Toto tub I think you'll be happy with it! FWIW, we have a Kohler cast iron shower pan in our guest bathroom and it's nice, too.

Thank you for the link. I am not sure if I read the spec sheet correctly since people rave about the width of their Toto cast iron tubs. The diagram shows 16.75 inches??? That does not seem "wide" considering Kohler lists basin base widths from 18-22.5 inches. Big sigh,,,I want a less than 17 inch high (prefer 15-16 inches for in/out safety) flanged alcove cast iron tub with a wide basin at the base and good floor space that is a pleasure to soak AND shower in.

Actually, it sounds like Toto's customer service was quite helpful when you called, they gave you two specific product names! Bon Ami and Soft Scrub are both extremely mild abrasives (about as abrasive as toothpaste) that won't dull the porcelain enamel surface. By "abrasive cleaners" they are referring to products like Comet or Ajax, which will scratch the living daylights out of that nice smooth porcelain finish. This dulls the surface and the microscopic scratches collect dirt, which leads to a dingy appearance. For routine bathroom cleaning I usually use Oxyclean, which is plenty sufficient for the whole room. The Mr. Clean Magic Erasers also work as well as Bon Ami (wonderful stuff, and very earth friendly) or Soft Scrub (Ecover makes a great nontoxic version) when there's soap scum build-up or a bathtub ring that needs dealing with. Plain old baking soda also makes an excellent extra-mild abrasive that doesn't scratch - make a paste with a little water and apply with a sponge.

We're also curious! Trying to decide between Toto 1525 and Kohler Mendota, but can't find either in the showroom to look at. We're leaning towards the Toto only because of the long wait time for Kohler because of the fire at their cast iron factory. I don't want to wait 3 to 6 months for a bathtub!

I frustrated with the non slip bottoms they put on cast iron tubs today.
Some feel like a grindstone (can't imagine sitting on that) and then Kohler uses that almost impossible to keep clean process.

Could you tell me what kind of slip resistant surface Toto uses on thier CI tubs?
