Lucy....my big women

Lucy, my "big women", crossed the rainbow bridge today. Yes, I called her that all the time...man I'm gonna miss her.....no more pain or suffering for you big girl.

Long story short.....she was diagnosed with a very aggresive bone cancer several months ago. Amputation would have been an option but she had it both of her front legs (ankle joints). Not sure I could have followed through with that option anyway. Between radiation and meds we did all we could for her.

She loved living up at the lake....her favorite pass time was patroling the shoreline.

A couple of weeks ago just hanging out in the dining room ...

She was a trooper to the end and didn't want to give up.....we both knew it was time to move on.....I'll love you forever and always Lucy!!!

I'm so very sorry David for your loss. Your Big Woman was a gorgeous dog. I'm sure she had many wonderful years with you up at the lake and otherwise. It's never easy to let go of these special ones. You have my sincere sympathy.

Lucy was my mothers name. I'll be thinking of you.. and Lucy.

Oh David I'm so very sorry to hear you lost your Lucy.

It's so very sad to lose a beloved pet. Just reading this makes me teary.

I hope nobody thought I wore socks with sandals! I meant to say that ALL shoes rub so I wear socks or hose, I don't wear the flip-flop type sandals at all b/c they rub. Sometimes I will wear hose with a strappy shoe that I guess you could call a sandal - if they're dressy, have heels (even wedges). Casual open-toe sandals I don't wear hose - of course I'm usually wearing those with shorts! Even in my 20's and wearing miniskirts I always wore hose with heels. They help reduce the friction. Don't do anything for sweaty feet though - I had lots of pairs of hose with stained feet from the dye coming off the shoes. My kids' shoes stink - even 10-yr old DD's feet sometimes stink. But the 15-yr runner's are the worst!

Exactly Texas Gem. Very nicely written I’m sure what follows will be of no interest to anyone but me. Threads like this always make me sad. Growing up, the “ideal woman” was Christie Brinkley. Tall, thin, pin-straight shiny blonde hair. Me? I was short, chunky, and had frizzy kinky hair that was all over the place. So for decades I tried to make my hair look “ideal.” But because I’m blessed with both frizzy and fine hair, chemicals do quite a number on it. I’ve tried relaxers, colors, straighteners. Doesn’t matter what I’ve tried, I’ve never looked like Christie Brinkley. I can remember my mother (may God rest her soul), sitting at the kitchen table clucking with her sister about the state of my hair. Gee, thanks mom. I’m a straight A student in honors classes, but yes please let’s focus on my hair. As I’ve gotten older and looked around, I’ve come to realize we all too often focus on things which literally do not matter. I am done waging a war with my hair. I do the best I can with what God and my genes gave me and that’s just going to have to suffice for everyone else on the planet. But for some reason, women particularly are often so harsh on other women about how they “look.” If you’re interested in wasting a little bit of time, poke around and see what this white woman’s standard of hair has done to our young black girls. My one big hope is that this standard does seem to be fading. I don’t have children of my own, but in talking with the children of my friends there seems to be much more emphasis on the things that really do matter. Or maybe I’m just deluding myself because the alternative is too sad to contemplate.

Well, plllog, if I ever got to visit you, I'd even drink the water! Although coffee and tea are kind of like flavorings, aren't they? And our water is actually good, it's the same aquifer that Ice Mountain draws their water from, just a few miles away. I spent my childhood drinking it, usually out of the garden hose because if I went inside for a drink Grandma would put me to work ironing washcloths or something. I lived in White Cloud for 35 years though, and their water was dreadful, it smelled of sulfur and was always slightly brown. Maybe that's when I learned to dislike water. And now, of course, here in Michigan we have the Flint water crisis and all those PFAS pollution problems. All this water around us and we can't keep it fit to drink, sheesh. In spite of the cheese thing, though, I think I'd have to at least try those blue cheese shortbreads. Yes, I know that if a major component is something I don't like, I probably won't like the end product, but you never know. It's that "7 year rule" coming around again.... Annie

David, I'm so sorry about Lucy. I know how much she meant to you. What a wonderful life she had with her human Dad.

You did the right thing for her. Let yourself grieve.

When the time is right, I hope you give another dog the same kind of love you gave to Lucy. You are very special.

Oh David, I am so sad for you. I know how much Lucy meant to you and I would have loved to have met her. You and Lucy made the right choice, she's at peace now, out of pain, and playing with all her CF furbabbies.

BTW, If we have another GD her name is probably going to be Lucy...or Clara.

Awww David, my heart goes out to you. I know how much she meant to you and I'm sorry I never had the opportunity to meet her. She certainly was a real beauty. Like Jessy, my heart sunk when I saw this thread, I didn't realize that she was ill.

David, I'm so sorry you have lost Lucy. I read your post with tears - it seems like last week, instead of last December, that we lost Brockley to cancer. I share your sorrow and your pain and know you will love her forever and always.

Oh David, somehow I knew too, before I ever opened this thread. The best and most loving thing we can do for our pets is to do what's best for them, not what's easiest for us. I know how much you loved Lucy and how hard it had to have been for you to let her go.

It's been over two years since I lost the WonderWeiner to lymphoma and I was talking to him last night, checking the flowers where he's buried. I marked his spot with the black iron dachshund Ann T gave me and I still cry.

I'm crying here at work and my staff is avoiding me. Hugs to you, my friend. I know the verse about heaven having streets paved with gold. My heaven is green, with wide fields and tall trees. WonderWeiner is waiting for me, along with all the beloved pets we've lost here. Lucy is waiting for you too.

I'm not Catholic, just a heathen Methodist, but I remember this:

Pope John Paul II declared in a public audience
in 1990 that "also the animals possess a soul and men must love and feel solidarity with our smaller brethren". He said, too, that they are the "fruit of the creative action of the Holy Spirit and merit respect," and are as near to God as men are."

The Pope went on to say that, "animals have the breath
of life and were given it by God. In this respect, man
created by the hand of God is identical with all living
creatures. ... The existence therefore of all living creatures depends on the living spirit/breath of God that not only creates but also sustains and renews the face of the earth."

Oh yes, they'll be there, waiting for us, just as they waited for us to come home from work, or back from shopping, or where ever we were. They'll be waiting.

My dear friend, I am heart broken to hear about your "big woman". I know how dear your babies are to you and what a void Lucy's passing leaves in your life.

Thank you all so much for your kind words and thoughts. They really mean a lot to me. Chuck is not dealing with very well at all tonight...he keeps wandering around the house meowing. Very sad/weird coming home for the first time tonight..

Went thru this same thing a few years ago.
My Daughters wanted to get me another pup but I didn't have
the heart to do it.

My 'Smokie " was a male German Shorthair Pointer.
We tortured him and he loved it.

If there is a Dog Heaven, they will be there, running around together.
