A Room of Her Own
See how women are carving out a space to unwind
Whether it's called a mom cave, craft studio, office or cozy corner, more and more women are carving out a space of their own. Specifically, a 'mom cave' is a spin on the 'man cave' — that classic, under-decorated room with the recliner and big-screen television. In what is now a growing design trend, many women (not just moms) are deciding to create their own in-home retreats. These spaces are for work, hobbies and good, old "me time." Women are being very creative in designing these spaces, too. They realize it doesn't require a large room and it doesn't have to be complicated or expensive. It only requires her personal touch.
In this lovely art studio, a framed watercolor of a fancy dress becomes the focal point and makes a statement about the woman who spends time here. Even if you can't designate an entire room for your personal space, consider claiming one wall in a room and define it with a piece of art that reflects your style.
If you have a spare closet, you're in business. Here, a pretty pink closet houses a desk and shelves. Just outside the door, there is additional work space, and check out that disco ball! Adding a bit of whimsy to your space is a great way to relieve stress.
In my office/mom cave, I began with a few of my favorite colors and then accessorized with items that are meaningful to me (and things that are a little girly too) — candles, handbags, family photos, flowers, cards and more. I spend many hours working here, but it's also where I read and unwind.
A sun room or eating area can also be your personal retreat. Here, beautiful windows, artwork and a graceful chandelier create an inviting space. This is a great area to spread out your work materials and crafting supplies, or have lunch with a few friends.
Using color is an easy way to define your style, but in a neutral space, accessories can speak volumes about one's design style. In this space, an elegant mirror, a delicate, crystal chandelier and fresh flowers reveal a look that is feminine and lavish.
Seating is very important in a office, studio or mom cave. Whether it's your work chair or an accent chair, it should be comfortable enough for multi-tasking or maybe just doing nothing at all!
